steering gear

after I adjusted the steering on 8n the gear box was empty so I filled with 90 wt before this I had no oil drips now I have a drip where clutch rod goes in to move the throwout bearing, is there a way gear lube can get down into flywheel clutch area?. doesn't seem to be leaking at plates I rotated to adjust steering. also seemed to be a drip where cotter pin sticks out, but most coming out in clutch rod area. maybe ill have to go to corn head grease would thawt be ok?

That's not coming from your steering box. The bottom is solid if I remember correct. Sounds like rear main is leaking or trans input seal. Correct me if I'm wrong

On my 51, there is a expansion plug, like on the engine block, on the bottom of the steering box. If that"s not leaking, then I would think it"s a cracked steering box. If oil is dripping down onto the cross shaft for the clutch, it would more than likely leak from the shaft bushing, and should also be leaking from the bottom of the clutch housing, where the cotter key is. If there is no leak at the cotter key, I would be checking for a plugged up hole. Spin the cotter key and push it up and down, and see what happens. Just my thoughts.

some boxes are solid, and some have a plug. I've not seent he solid ones, but i know people here have reported units with no expansion plugs.

My 850, which I believe is set up in the same way as your 8N with respect to the steering gearbox and transmission casing, developed the same symptoms shortly after I bought it.

The seller had filled the gearbox with gear oil before I picked it up. What I found when I removed the gearbox was that enough oil was leaking from the failed sector seals to wick into the ungasketed interface between the stearing gearbox and the transmission housing and run down the inside walls to the weep hole. The clutch was dry, as was the underside of the gearbox.

I think I jumped the gun, oil stopped dripping it was not near the amount I put in I think I was very sloppy at first trying to put 90 wt. in with tube on end of bottle, a lot got between gear box and console it was running down very thinly to clutch rod and dripping, one drop is all I saw coming from cotter pin. I finally used a squirt oil can to fill it laborious but worked. eventually I am going to have to rebuild steering gear to get slop out of steering
