alternator belt length

When I bought this 1946 2N tractor the alternator belt was the wrong length. Does anyone happen to know what's the right length of belt.

" Does anyone happen to know what's the right length of belt. "

That's hard to say because N's didn't come w/ alternators. The belt length would be determined by the length & placement of the mounting bracket.

That being said......a good starting point would be the OEM belt length for the generator; check out tip # 75 at the link.
75 Tips

Find a piece of rope about the width of the belt, wrap it around
the pulleys the same way the belt would run then measure the
length of rope it took. That will get you pretty close.

Quick & dirty. The belt will be destroyed, but it is wrong size, so not a great loss. Being that the belt was installed, it apparently is too long.
Move the alternator or adjustment idler to the shortest position.
Cut the belt. Pull the belt snugly into position & mark the overlap. You now have the correct length. Buy one that length, or the next closest longer.

The fact you own an 8N means you are on first name basis with the parts guy. He may let you take an 5/8' 40 - 42 - 44. One of these surely fits. Return the other ones.
