Update on 8N hydraulics

Hey folks.

My 8N had a problem with the 3-point lift
hydraulics.

If you had a load on them, mower or other heavy
implement the minute you pushed in the clutch the
lift arms would begin to drop.

Not a game ender but pretty easy to paint yourself
into a corner with the brush hog.

I ordered the parts from this site and
disassembled the lift cover and associated
components and found the cylinder in reasonably
good shape. I honed it with a brake hone and the
finish came out good.

I installed the updated piston with the o-ring and
assembled and adjusted per the instructions in the
FO4 manual.

I hooked up the 5 foot brush hog and mowed for a
bit and brought the tractor and mower into the
shop and left the mower suspended.

Came back the next day and she was still in the
same position! Small victory but it was my first
try at tractor hydraulics.

Thanks to all who commented and helped.

Yep, i had about the same experience. Lift wouldnt stay up at all, replaced the piston with a new style and oring and the relief valve and it stays up for days now with weight on. I share ur feeling of victory.

Hey Jim.

You service the cylinder and controls by removing the top cover. Be prepared, it weighs over a hundred pounds and needs to be removed carefully.

I used an engine crane to do mine.

The pump comes out from the bottom for service.

Good luck,

Brad
