Plowed a Little

With the 961D out of commission, I hooked the plow up this afternoon to the 8N. By the way, I suspect the 8N secretly sabotaged the 961D out of fear that she was going to get replaced.

Anyway, I turned over about 1/3rd of acre in 30 minutes or so. I'll plant oats in this ground the first week of August for late fall grazing. It was hard pulling as the ground was full of pocket gopher mounds. We also don't do a lot of plowing on our farm, so the sod was pretty thick. I then put the cultivator on, and when finished with that I did some mowing.

I read your post in the other forum on the 961. Good luck with it, that's a good lookin tractor and I hope it doesn't cost you too much to get it back up and goin. Maybe the old N needs a little more diggin time lol.

colin,
I too really enjoy plowing, nice to warm the old tractors up sometimes.

picture of me plowing one of my truck patches with my double disc plows.

fun to use these old plows, but can see why people stop using them, they will turn up the ground in big chunks sometimes.

just a different wrinkle in plowing.

Yes it is TO35, 1957 model, was cream color when new.

The plows are MF64 double disc plows, must have been made near the end of the MF disc plow run as they have the bend tube main frame, not very many of them around.

I do enjoy using them as I have some garden spots that were old fence rows at one time. The old disc plows will plow right through roots, stumps, whatever and just cut them out or roll over them and keep going.

I guess the invention of trip plows killed the disc plow.

The little Ferguson is about the same size tractor as the 8n, so I enjoy reading about what you guys do with your tractors.

Thank, Tim! I'll get the 961 running again. Either with a rebuilt engine or a replacement engine.

Even though I use my equipment to farm, I've made a choice to use the older equipment as a way to stay in touch with agriculture's past and also to preserve some of that past. Getting that tractor running again is a part of my commitment to that history.

LOL Colin, there is something to preserving history but if I had my druthers I'd like newer equipment. Comfort plus heat and air on demand is nice!

plow is a MF64 disc plow
ford also made a disc plow similar to this one

they had their place and do a great job.

the key to proper operation of an old disc plow is the condition of the rear disc blade or guide blade, it must be in good to excellent condition.

Rick - Your farm is also larger than ours. If I spent more time on the tractor in all seasons, I might have a different view. But I doubt I'll ever move "up" to the modern tractors and all their gadgets and plastic. I like the old iron.

(quoted from post at 13:51:25 07/13/14) Same here, Colin. Keeping the old equipment going is half the battle, er, fun. :p

Well in my defense, I'd like to see my tools get the chance to rust a little for once! This year that 1/2 hasn't been fun. I am ready to cut hay again. Checked over the haybine yesterday and spent about 4 hours on the baler the other day fixing the monitor that parts are NLA. One bad diode and one bad resistor. Be cutting tomorrow, chance of rain in the PM today. I'd just like to get out fishing a little more. Had the boat out twice this year.
