source for parts to convert 6v starter to 12v

What parts are needed to convert a 6v starter (4 years old, bought new from New Holland dealer) to 12v and where can one obtain them. Reading in the archives it seems that brushes and bushing(s) are needed to replace the ones in the starter. This is a starter motor on a 9N tractor. Thanks, Brian

Simple answer is NONE, a 6 volt start will work just fine on 12 volts and the only way to get a true 12 volt starter is to find a true one since the difference in a 6 and 12 volt starter is the windings. All my tractors have 6 volt starters on them and almost all are on 12 volts

A one wire delco is the simplest alternator solution only one wire and a diode are required however you may not have enough rpm to properly excite it. I have several that have this setup but im not a picky man. The best is an external alternator off of a 70's vintage ford with an external regulator. Less problems getting it to start charging. If you use a resistor on the coil it will work but otherwise use a new one.if you have a front mount distributor this site sells a complete kit for $133. Has brackets and alt.

Like Old said. Just put an alternator on it and give the starter 12 volts. I have converted many and never had problems. I have also put alternator kits on Model T's for people and the starter works just fine on 12 volts.
My 8N has been on 12 volts for many years and gets used all the time.

JR1983, have I missed something? I think Brian was asking
about a starter, not the charging circuit at all.
I am curious about putting a diode in a one wire setup though!

Brian, as Old and Bruce pointed out, no changes needed to your
starter. A 9N has a mechanical switch as opposed to a solenoid
and no changes are needed there either.

If you'd like a complete, easy to follow diagram of how to wire it,
Google "wiring diagrams by JMOR". He has made it real easy for us!

And welcome to the forum! :)

You might try coiling up a 36 to 48 inch #4 cable between the starter switch and the starter post... It WILL soften the 'hit' and still still give good cranking speed. Really, it does help..... and it is lots simpler than tearing a starter apart. Your choice, your time and your money.

Thanks fellahs. Background to this is that I just replaced the ring gear on the 9N, a bit of a job as you know. It was worn/ground down to poop at two positions 180 degrees apart. The tractor was long ago 12 volt converted and does well in all respects. But, the starter "seems" to have a lot of ummphh when started and was sold to me as a 6 volt starter at a New Holland place which the man said (rightly) should work on the tractor (it does work). I am ignorant electrically (and in other ways) and thought that the combination of 12v battery -- "6v starter" might put premature wear on a ring gear (this gear was probably from 1941) and that by putting new brushes and bushing(s) on the starter I have would "convert" it to 12 volts.

Proper conversion requires replacement of the 6V field coils with 12V coils. There is no need to replace bushings, brushes, etc.

Field coils are available but not readily so at retail. Speak to a rebuilder to find a source.

Caveat: Field coil replacement may not be cost effective.

... J&N electric has the parts if you wanna make it a 12V starter WHY I dunno a 6V starter works well on 12V... I don't deal with them any more they shipped me sum'n I did not order I did not accept it but they keep billing me for it till I told them were to stick there invoice and BTW track were UPS deliver it to and who signed for it... Last I heard from'em UPS ate it....
