641 No Spark

Back first of the year I was moving one of my log
splitters with the 641. It was running fine and
all of a sudden it shut off. I figured it ran out
of gas. It was pouring rain and the tractor was
out of the way so I just left it. A couple months
later the grass was getting tall around it, and we
were in spring clean up mode, so I grabbed the gas
can and went to move it. Had plenty gas. Pulled
dist cap and cranked it over, no spark? Let it sit
an other month or so till I got a chance to work
on it. Started at the dist again, and whoa, had
spark. Started right up and purred like a kitten.
It ran fine again until last Friday, was backing
up to move the same old wood splitter, and it cut
off, no spark. What would fail intermittently like
that? Please don't say voltage regulator. Last
week I found a brand new Ford VR and thought it
went to one of Dad's old, long gone, dump trucks.
I think I threw it in the steel barrel I took to
the scrap yard Monday, Joe.

" Please don't say voltage regulator."

No, it's not the v/r. The v/r is in the charging circuit; your problem is in the ignition circuit.

You're going to need a test light or a meter.

You've got an intermittent open circuit. That could be as simple as a loose battery cable, frayed wire on the side of the distributor, faulty ignition switch.....the list is almost endless. So, the next time it stops, immeadiately trace the circuit, starting at the battery. W/ the meter, find battery voltage at the battery. (12.35 volts)

Next, go to the points. You should see battery voltage across the open points. If not, you do not have current that far. So, back up.....go to the coil. Got 12.35 v going into the coil? But not at the points?

Hmmmmmm......

You found the problem.

Got the idea? Keep tracing the circuit until you find battery voltage. Then fix the problem.

What would cause that well many thing could
#1 ignition switch going bad.
#2 Loose wire some place
#3 a condenser that is bad
#4 A rotor going bad learned that one the hard way
#5 wet or dirty points
And probably a few other things

Thanks again guys. It was an easy one, ignition switch. It had spaid terminals on it.So,I stripped a piece of jumper wire and stuffed it in the ends of the two leads, bypassing the switch. Started right up. Think I'll give it a full tune up while I'm messing with it. I'm getting ready to take it up to the farm in WV. I have a 7 acre field that my neighbor used to cut hay off of. When he passed away his son asked if he could keep cutting the hay, but never has. Getting pine trees all over the field. Last week I traded a day of fence clearing for a friend, I got a 6' draw bar bush hog. She has 2 150 acre farms. The one she lives on gets mowed. With the 6' bush hog it took all week just to mow. She went out and bought a new bat wing and now she can get it done in 2 days. The old 6' bush hog was getting eaten up by weeds, you had to know where it was to see it. I'm happy and excited to get it up there. It used to cost me over $100 to trailer my JD 265 lawn tractor up there, and took the best part of 2 days to mow. Now with the 641 up there I can run up in my diesel VW for about 20 bucks, and get the grass cut in a few hours, Joe.
