talked it over with the boss alst night she is on board with anything to make the mowing quicker. so iwas good to go with the $500 unit until i saw this today. says hes had it for 5 years and his 9n just will not lift it. got it from a golf course and has the manual too.

5 hours from now it should be on my trailer.

yes one with front wheels would be great; maybe someday. got a budget to deal with just like anyone lese.

thanks to all for the feedback.

and WI Dave: the "other" one should still be avaialble!
woods mower

I had a woods like that and liked it very well. As for the front wheels, I used check chains so the cut was the same all the time so no need for wheels up front. My son is still using it years after I gave it to him upon buying a bigger JD lawn tractor. I would say go for it since there's one like that on craigs list around here for $450.

Good looking mower in nice condition but no front wheels using it on a 9N makes limiting chains a must. Check the PTO height, in the pic it looks too high for an N tractor, if so you will not be able to lift it but a few inches before the shaft is seriously out of line.

This is popular model used on many n tractors, myself included. The pto is made to flex. I could do a full lift with no problem. This is a lot of mower for the price.

At 250 it's a steal. My 8N lifts my Woods RM59 just fine. At full life the PTO shaft makes some noise so I normally only lift it about 1/2 way. Limiter chains are easy to make and it cuts great.

Looks like it's missing the side discharge chute. Not a big problem. Guy can buy one new or make your own.

went to get it and the guy offered to hook it up so i could see / hear it under power. an offer only a fool would turn down. made a terrible screeching noise and afeter a short bit some belt smoke. uh oh.

ended up being somehting simple; guy had cranked the belt tensioner but never loosened the pulley so it couldn't move. little tab on the back side of teh spring was jammed aginst the pulley. for whatever reason it took a lot of tries telling him he had to loosen the bolt holding down the pulley so it could move. he just didn't want to do it. FINALLY loosened the bolt and the spring pressure did what it is supposed to do and moved the pulley away from the tab. after that it ran quiet and no more smoke.

this one has skids on the front so i'll give it a go like that. checked with woods about front casters; they said usually not enough room because these ride so close to the back of teh tractor; interference problems with rear wheels. if they would fit they run 278.66 each for the full assembly. ouch.

go get an orc and a new top link and i'll be waiting for the grass to grow. really loooking forward to giving this a run.

nice
used finish mowers are big money here.
If there isn't room for front gauge wheels,
a couple brackets on the front between the lift points, to mount one of those wide rollers like big mower decks use would work
to prevent scalping.
Until then, our hosts sell the check chain kit.

You likely don't need an ORC with that.
Finish mowers don't have nearly the inertia that a brush mower has when spun up to full speed.
So they don't propell your tractor forward much at all when you step on the clutch.
Try it first before you buy an orc.

I don't know Ultra, my Woods will push an 8N forward about 12 feet. After I discovered that little fact I went and got an ORC and a new bush to replace the one I ran over.

That's a great price. I've been looking at them recently.

Just last weekend I snagged a brand new 60" Maschio finish mower at a farm consignment auction. Had never even had the PTO shaft attached to it. It was a dealer who consigned two of them ("over stock" the auctioneer said) plus some other new stuff (two 3 pt. seeders, three fork lift frames for a skid steer but no forks, a 3 pt. bale spear and a 4' bush hog-type rotary mower). Got it for $600. This was a 2011 model, current MSRP is around $2,200, have seen them on sale for about $1,500. My quick hitch won't fit (too wide) so have to do a simple modification for it to attach so will probably use it without the quick hitch on the 8N or the Mahindra for now until I get the parts I need.

gave it a try last night in the wide open without the orc. agree not near as bad as a hog stil lenough to make me want one. very first thing i did was angage the pto release the clutch to get the mower up to speed. then push the clutch in and drop it into first. a grind and then a jump several feet ahaed as it slammed into gear. so used to having the orc on the 8n with the hog i just did it that way out of habit.

also going to put the limiter chains on. tried it running on the front skids and wasnt happy with the marks they left. i'll move the skids up some and leave them on so it lifts when needed but for flat and level mowing i want the skids off the ground.

very nice cut though couldn't be happier about that. boss is happy too so its a win all around.

If you have welder or access to one the chains are easy to make. The skids were never intended to support the front all the time, they are an anti scalping protect the blades kinda thing. When you go to pull the blades it may be left hand threads, mine is. I was able to download for free the owners manual from Woods a couple of years ago.
