hydraulics working poorly

my hydraulics on the 2n are working poorly and im not sure why they only work some of the time and it feels like theres a catch when I raise or lower them and they are very touchy

A good start is to pull the right side inspection cover off and have a look see as to what is going on. Having an I-T FO-4 manual is a big help since it has some good pictures to go by

Is the oil cloudy and dirty / full of water? Who was the president the last time you changed the oil / cleaned the sump?

Gritty watery oil will make the control valve stick.
