1951 8N runs poorly

Yesterday, all of a sudden it started running like crap. I took the carb apart and cleaned it. No change. The distributor cap and rotor always get a lot of black carbon buildup. I scraped it off, no change. Any hints?

I would replace points, condenser and cap and rotor and set the points to 0.025" Also change the spark plugs. I use auto lite 437 spark plugs.

Always, always check your spark First.
VERIFY that you have a bright bluish white spark that will jump at least 5/16".
Short or yellowish spark will not do.
Requires No tools to pull a plug wire and check.
Only then go on to fuel.

As Ultra say check spark first. Trouble shoot then parts never the other way around.
Does choking it hurt or help?? When was the last time you cleaned to oil bowl of the air cleaner??
Good steady flow of gas out of the carb drain plug???

My 52 8N was doing that and after i pulled out
about half of my hair i had sence enought to check
the gap on the points, yes!! they had sliped and
was about closed, Set them at 25 and still running
good. James
