I have a 48 8n 6volt replaced old kill switch with new one. It was rated 20 amp old one was just plane old switch. One wire to amp meter and one to coil. Checked wires to switch to get off and on position right. It was off went up to put gas line on carb and heard clicking sound, got to switch and wire to amp meter was on fire and melting. was the 20 amp switch too much or a faulty switch ,or shorted out some where? put new switch on and no power to switch

Sounds like some how you messed up the wires and shorted out some thing. Those are a very simple wire up 2 wire switch

My guess is you are bad with electrical wireing, and you goofed up with the wire cutters, terminal ends and wires.

1, switch rating is just capacity.. you can run a 3 amp coil on a 3 amp switch.. or a 30 amp switch.

2, the original ammeters were inductive loop, these new ones use in and out posts.. those posts also happen to be the ones that are used mount the ammeter.. the mount bracket is metal.. thus to prevent the bracket from grounding the meter out it uses lil plastic bushings.

my guess is when you mounted the wire to the ammeter is that you damaged or removed the bushing and shorted the meter to ground. or that when you installedd the switch, the switch is grounded out.

3, kill switch? really? the rest of us call it an ignition switch. Kill switch make sme think of a grounding switch for a magneto!!
