Need monocular effective at close range - maybe 12-15 feet...what do I look for (examples 8X20? 8X40??
I have no clue.)Prefer wider angle..any suggestions?? Tks

The first number is your magnification, the second is the field of view. The larger the second number the bigger area you are going to see. I would look for a low magnification and large field of view, but I'm not sure you are going to find something that will focus well at that short of a distance.

Not sure if your application, but I do a bunch of crossbow shooting, and I picked up a youth modem fir a buddys kid, it came with a complete krap red dot site, but had a good pic rail, I rummaged around and found a cheap leapers 4x24 scope that had come on an sks I own, I had removed it as I prefer iron sights on old military rifles, unless they were issued with optics, like s mosin nagant sniper rifle with vintage PU scope, in any event, the 4x24 scope was great for 20-80 yrd shooting, my other cross bow usually have 4x32 or 6x24 or 6x32, but those bows are stronger pulls than the youth model. Not sure that helped you any, just relating my exp with a 4x24 scoe I recently used, at 20-40 yes it was ideal, and quite useable at 60-80.

our targets were 18" square or 2' square targets with bulls, plus hd foam torso targets... Head shots with modern crossbows at those ranges, using those scopes mentioned are nearly guaranteed, if the person holding the bow is doing their part.

At 12-15', a 1 or 1.5x scope or holo site should be more than enough I'd think

heck ww2 German scopes on the k98 8mm mauser bolt action rifles the Germans used were ZF 41 scopes and they were only 1.5x

Russian ww2 mosin nagant bolt action 7.62x54r rifles could have a pu scope on sniper models, and those were 3.5x

Here, we have "archers" as a SECURITY force located atop a tower on the approach to my main customer's compound (orchard complex).

The local school system is known as the "KNIGHTS".

Personally, I am fix'N to secure a "FISHING" crossbow. A local sporting goods store supplies all necessary equipment.

Pennsylvania HUNTING LAW requires that a fishing license be on the person using a fish'N bow.

I have a permanent PA fishing license.

The eyepiece on the "archer's bows are quite effective for 100 yds. or so."

The fishing bows do not have an eyepiece.

For catfishing, I simply use an old fachioned "crank-up telephone". Probably illegal in YOUR area, in the SOUTH.

Moral to the story: GUESS I will have to get a "tourist" license when I get down SOUTH.

Probably January at the FLYWHEELER's. Then back to STEPHEN FOSTER.

Lay'N out the course for APPLATCHACOLA River.

maybe a cheap used handgun scope? usually low magnification downside is limited field of view. designed for long eye relief if thats a factor

Yea, I think something held close to the eye is better..just a bird watching thing-normally up pretty close outside the window..Monocular or binocular of the right magnification should work just fine..just didn't know what to start looking for..Thanks

You might wanna look at a camera. Different lenses can give you good clarity at a closer range, with a wider field of view and if you see something you like you have the option to capture the image. The downside would be price.

There was a time when I used my CANNON 50mm. 100-300 zoom lens on my little .22 cal. rifle for gettin rid of RATS that used to live inder the seat of the 2 holer, outside.

I taped and clamped the CANNON camera with lens attached, to the barrel. Sighted in the whole apparatus in a bench vise, and was ready!!!!!

Captured a few shots on slides. However, the slides turned YELLOW after 60 yrs. in storage in the attic.

John,PA 35mm. camera stuff CHEAP at yard sales.NOW

For night work, I had a pretty powerful flash light mounted UNDER the barrel of the rifle.
