Oil ring end gap

I found the specs for the 8n ring end gap for the top 2 rings but I don't see the end gap for the lower oil ring. I bought an 8n that was smoking pretty bad. It had good compression. Pulled the head and oil pan and found the cooling passages in the head COMPLETLY filled with mud. The cyl. looks good and measures standard and within specs. The engine appears to have been apart recently. Looked at the rings and they do not appear to be worn, but the top 2 have an end gap over .070 and the oil ring gap is over a 1/4 inch. I am thinking that someone put in the wrong rings. What is the end gap supposed to be on the oil ring? Thanks

Harold,The end gap is the same for all rings,.010-.017-new with a .035 wear limit.Remember no tighter than .010.Check 1/4 to 1/2 way down the bore and use a pistion to push the ring down to keep the ring square in the bore.

Sure does sound like someone installed the wrong rings!

What is your ring side clearance?

Piston ring GURU Dave Reed puts great emphasis on that area, as well.
