Is it me or NAPA

I call the local No American Parts Available (NAPA) store when I have exhausted all other places including the Dollar store. I wanted to take my winter project 8N which has been in the family a long time and has been worked like a rented mule. Fixed all the oil leaks seals, gaskets and lift arm support shafts . Tore it down stripped all the paint off repainted it and new rubber, new meter. The engine is well maintained very clean no smoke and great compression. This will be the last time I will do this one at my age. I thought I want to step up and put the best ignition parts possible to go along with my project. I have seen the post about Blue Streak parts so thats what I want.I Call NAPA gave them all the #s that Bruce VA has for them. Counter guy says we have them on hand. I went by to pick them up and parts guy set down all the parts I wanted,ya they may be the right parts but they are Echilin not Blue Streak,he says there the same thing just that he cross ref my numbers to his brand. I said thanks but no thanks. My ? is was this a ploy to push his brand or do they not make Blue Streak anymore? I have came across posts on the forum that they can be had at NAPA. I didnt even ask that at NAPA because I never have any luck with them on price or they will say we can order it and this NAPA charges shipping when you order it over the counter, can you believe that. Heck I can order it and pay shipping to my house. So whats the deal. Thanks

WW2,
One sure thinks twice about what the agenda is in today's business community. Had to pick up special spark plugs for an R2 Cat. The price at a local auto supply was twice the price at the same named store 30 miles away.
Helped a friend replace his bushings on a front mount and Blue Streak were available at an Auto Value. If you have one in the area you may want to try them out. HTH

This site sells Blue Streak points. In my opinion they are the best that you can buy. I have never purchased Blue Streak points at NAPA. The NAPA brand of Echlin points are second best in my opinion. Most counter people only know what the computer says. They would give you a muffler instead of points if the numbers matched up.

Our "local" NAPA store, here in GETTYSBURG,PA, offers FREE DELIVERY of parts, etc.

Saves me from having to go to town at $3.85 per gal SUNOCO gas.

Think this way.....1.65 sdpart plug delivered FREE. 2 deliveries a day. MON-SAT. GIRL DRIVER, sometimes. :) :)

Johnnie.

they can get the blue streak parts, carquest can too, the problem today is finding a parts store with countermen who know they need to have them in stock, the older gents are mostly retired these days, and their replacements are computer people, but not parts people that is they can look up a part on their computer, but they dont have the mechanical experience to go beyond that, like the older guys who could walk back and pull most of the common stuff off the shelf without looking it up , the man i worked for when i was at a carquest store love the 8n, he grew up running one on a farm, overhauled it every 2 years due to very high time on the tractor,in those years, it was their only tractor, and could tell a customer exactly what to do for one, walk back in the store and pull most of the tune up stuff from memory, unfortunatly he is passed now

Here is my complete list of all NAPA numbers. Note that the points have 2 numbers: Bluestreak AND Echlin.

They are NOT the same. I use both. Echlin are fine, Bluestreak are better.

" They would give you a muffler instead of points if the numbers matched up. "

Yep. And I experienced that.

I gave my daughter the part number for the brass manifold nuts. The counter guy at NAPA gave her 4 sparkplugs. She told him they were supposed to be brass nuts. He looked up the number & sure enough, it came back to a spark plug.

I took the note w/ the part number back to the store along w/ an empty bag w/ the same number. Asked him to look it up. It said spark plugs. I asked him why when the number was clearly on the note & the bag. He just shrugged his shoulders. I asked to see the manager. He looked at the number & bag & worked in the back & produced the 4 brass nuts. In the same bag.

Echlin is NAPA"s "store brand", and nowadays made by SMP (Standard Motor Products).

SMP also owns Standard, Standard Blue Streak, Niehoff and BWD.

So, NAPA is generally going to sell their store brand, and the other SMP brands are parceled out to the other auto parts stores in the trade area, so those APPEAR to be selling different brands with different part numbers, but in reality are all SMP parts in different colored/numbered boxes.

BOTTOM LINE to all that babbling, it"s unlikely you"ll find "Blue Streak" points at a NAPA.

You need the find the auto parts store in your area that has the "Standard Ignition" franchise.

I bought a tubing bender at the local NAPA store yesterday.

The tool was rated for bending 3/8 tube and was sold for bending 3/8 coil steel tubing.

It bent on the first try.

Looks like we have another outlet for chinese crap tools.

Brad

I have been told NAPA can get lawn mower parts to D-9 Cat parts if they look in the catalog but they rely on a putter and so here we are.

I have always used Eclin points with NO problems. When I had the truck fleet I used NAPA brand plugs with Eclin wires, caps and rotors. And will continue to do so.

I've never been able to find Blue Streak ignition parts for my side mount 8N or 660. So I've been using Echlin parts from NAPA. So far they are working just fine. My 8N points are on their 5th season with no issues. For me Echlin is very good.

Ya on the old guys, but I have dealt with this guy for 37 years and in that time he has NEVER gotten the right part for me, I always when forced to call NAPA ask for someone else, but when he answered I gave him a chance and in the words of Dr. Phil "hows that working for Ya?. I know NEVER is a strong word but its true. I have gone for years without using Napa and my trend will continue.

Just throwing this out. Anytime I buy from NAPA I ask for a discount. Just by saying our small company name, I get at least a 25% discount. Most NAPA's don't ask for anything except a name. You could be Bob's lawn mower repair for instance, no proof needed. If you do know someone who does have a business, ask if you can use their name. It would have no effect on them as far as taxes and such. My son works for the Chevy dealer here and if I use his name at one store where they buy their parts, I get a full 50% discount. The discount doesn't apply to most shelf Items though. Next time you shop there try it. Doesn't hurt to ask.

So let me get this right. You call napa and give him a part number you need. He cross references it and has the part instock to get you going again but it's echlin(which are good parts) not blue streak. So instead of buying the points he has instock or having him order the blue streaks if you want them so bad you decide to bad mouth them? Imagine if this was over parts you could even tell a difference between! Well your napa is better than my case ih dealer. I needed a radiator for a case skid loader ASAP. Called my dealer and they could order one for almost $1000 and take almost a week to get in. Called back later and asked if they had a aftermarket supplier and they said they did and had a aftermarket radiator in stock for $400 so as you can see a good parts man who will cross reference what you need dosent need to be made a fool for trying to help you out.

NAPA stores are pretty much like every place else.
some good, some bad.
luck of the draw when it comes to employees.
Somebody that knows computers and just wants a job in an air-conditioned store...not so good.
Someone that has spun wrenches for a living/hobby, but had to change jobs for whatever reason.....good.
Someone that started there right out of school and has now been there 30 years....the very best.
I have 3 NAPA store about the same distance from me.
One caters to farmers= best
one to real mechanics= very good
one that is near a city and carries a lot of floormats= a joke

As far as part numbers, like said all stores cross to their own brand.
And they usually have a couple of quality-price options, same # cross.
Pick the best, and take the part out and LOOK at it before you buy.
a quick look over will tell you a lot.
Most here have handled quality points. ( usually the ones you take out of an old tractor! )
If the new ones don't look as good, leave them on the counter, say no thanks, and leave..

(quoted from post at 17:44:14 04/23/14) I have been told NAPA can get lawn mower parts to D-9 Cat parts if they look in the catalog but they rely on a putter and so here we are.

this is indeed true to an extent, it just depends on how good of counter help your local NAPA has.
