Chrome lift piston?

Cleaning up the parts from My 8n's lift cover, I notice that the 3-ring piston is chrome plated.

I'm curious if this is usual, or if it was maybe done later to save a worn piston.

I've never seen or heard of a chrome plated lift cylinder piston. Nor would plating be a cost effective way of servicing one.

i'd think the rings grooves would have to be cleaned too..

It might be cost effective if you happen to work at a plating shop. My question is would it be worth doing? I'll presume mine has been there for the last 71 years and even if I need to replace it with a part from 'the land of almost right' it should still out last me as is.
