my buddy called me and said his switch went bad and he has to cross it over at solenoid.
how do I chk the switch to determine if bad ??

if he is still using the OE grounding switch.. I'm surprised he is going to the trouble of 'crossing it over' at the solenoid.

it would be easier, as the poster below said.. just jump the lil insulated terminal on the side of the switch to the trans cover after checking you are in neutral.

if nada.. then i sugest checking the solenoid itself.. if it works. then check the wire between.

"just jump the lil insulated terminal on the side of the switch to the trans cover after checking you are in neutral."

he said he tried jumping a wire from the switch to ground and it wont do nothing.

Does it crank if he grounds the small terminal on the solenoid?
If not the solenoid may be bad, or may be the wrong type.
Or it could be the right solenoid turned around backwards.
The little terminal should face [b:8962ad37fe]in[/b:8962ad37fe] toward the engine.

An ohmmeter would be handy here if you have one available.
The thumb switch supplies ground to the small terminal to crank.
If the terminal on the switch connects to ground when you push
it down, the switch is at least working. The other end of that wire
at the solenoid should also connect to ground when the switch
is pushed, if it does not, check the wire for continuity.

The resistance checks can be done with the battery disconnected.
That would keep the engine from actually rolling over.
They will roll over with or without the original key turned on.

If you are sure the switch is bad, then replace it.

well, I went and checked it out and the safety switch is good and solenoid is bad. I took mine off my 8n and installed it on my buddys and she cranks fine.
now my question ? which solenoid is the correct one for the 8N ?
His had the 6v with the round button on the bottom and has been on the tractor for several years.
I also had 2 new ones identical to his with the button on bottom and it wont crank with either one.
So wheres the difference ??
BTW when the button on bottom of solenoid is pushed it will crank with the 2 new ones and his old one that's bad will crank it when the button is pushed in.

8N solenoid was mounted on the starter barrel.
Is yours mounted there or somewhere else on the tractor?
There were different types of 3 wire solenoids that will mount
elsewhere and work just fine, but some required power to the
small terminal to energize instead of ground.
Those do not work with the original wiring.
Pushing the small button manually closes the contacts, so either
will work when you do that, but the energizing coil doesn't work.

that explains it better. i never thought to jump a pos. to small terminal.
so what part number for original - solenoid

I replaced my switch as per the instructions from Bruce (VA). It went very well. Thanks.
Make Sure the tractor is actually in neutral. Sometimes that can be a problem. Get an Ohmmeter and lift the wire maybe disconnect battery first. The switch should read zero ohms to ground when pressed.
