Bruce,
Read the article about the front mount distributor in the N News magazine. Noticed the first thing mentioned is to replace bushings if any side movement is noticed. Relayed that info to a friend to cure his poor starting 8N. Had the work done and the 8N now purrs like a gray cat:) Told him 15-17 thousandths means a lot when working with an 8N.

You're welcome. Tnx for the follow-up.

What really is telling about the importance of new bushings is point gap. W/ new bushings in all of my frontmounts, I can get the gap open on Echlin & Bluestreak points to .30, exactly twice the spec.

I'd like to thank you as well, Bruce. Just happened to have the distributor out & on the bench changing points, so your post was timely and very helpful to me.
Now I've got to find a good machine shop!

Did you make that jig?

" Did you make that jig?"

Nope.

A regular here, Dan Allen (aka "The Old Hokie") makes them. It gives you that third hand needed when you try to time a frontmount w/ a straight edge!
