They get "creamed" on the road all the time. I don't think I would ever get that hungry. joe

My mother-in-law said that back in the recession days, some of the country folk around would trap possums and feed them "normal" food (as opposed to the scavenger stuff possums are known to eat). The clean food was supposed to have improved the taste after a month or so.

I suspect that real hunger would improve the taste of most anything if the hunger got bad enough. Kinda like "Hombre" said, "you would eat and then fight for the bones", in reference to the lady saying she would never eat a dog.

Exactly.

slightly different is trapping ferral hogs and feeding them corn or bread a few days before butchering.. Weeks even
. Many places have day old bread stores and you can get pickup truck beds full of bread for pennies on the dollar, good fir hog finishing.. Cheap too.

True story........When I was flying for Bar Harbor Airlines...a bunch of the older pilots were from Maine's north woods....we called them all Maineiacs....one really strange old coot was named Daryl.....one day he is sitting in the crew room....chomping away at something.....just making conversation I called over...."whatcha eating there Daryl".....he just says ...."a porcupine sandwich"......"thats a good one Daryl".....says I......he leaves to fly somewhere.....and one of the other guys says....."No Ed.....you don't understand....he wasn't messing with you.....he was eating a porcupine sandwich"....OK

that's what we do with our chickens. helps stretch the feed, and we get about 100 loaves for $15. some of the stuff is still good, and promptly goes into the freezer.

many stores pull them when they are a couple days fromt he 'sell by' date.

you can find bread at them stores that still has a day left on the sell by date usually!
