Been having a devil of a job getting my 53 merc to run right - it has the old 'teapot' carb Holley 1901 - it would start and run fine from cold then when warmed up or on the road would feel like it was missing/surging.....well, I think I found the problem today - the guy who helped me remove and install the engine adjusted the float level in the carb as it was dripping gas through the accelerator pump tubes - said the level was set too high - ever since then have had this problem - well, when I took the carb apart I manually lifted up the float...sure looked like it was way down....well today looked up the info in my old book - float level should be 5/32 from top of carb body to top of float at the furthest point from the needle and seat...got my little measuring device and....it was waaaaay too low! I think it was starving for gas - re set the float and started it up....fingers crossed and knock on wood the problem seems to have gone away!

Sounds like you found the problem. I had one once that had to have float adjusted about once a week or it would do the same thing. I finally rebuilt the carb and that was permanent fix. These are pretty easy to rebuild and I believe rebuild kits are still avaible

I had a 4 bbl tea pot 50 years ago that the O Ring that sealed the bowl to the bottom leaked .
It does sound like you found your problem tho.
