the 8N has a bit of a sputter to it. It is very erratic and only occurs when there is no load on the engine at idle or going down a hill without a load. Any ideas?

describe it?

how does it act under laod and at throttle?

is it puffing blck smoke?

does it hesitate on quick throttle up?

Gurgle and act like it is choking out?

Is the sputter you hear simply a skip now and then at idle?

I would describe it as a skip now and then at idle. It doesn't hesitate or act like it is gonna choke out. Under a load it does what it should, no issues at all. It pulls a 6ft finish mower up a 30 degree incline with no problem, no bog down. It only sputters at idle with no load

then it's a freckle or a mole.

IE. if it's not killing it, and at load it's fine.. then you are seeing the rare pecularity of issues between 30's era technology on carb, valves and points all together... and you get a skip now and then at idle.

If you want a sewing machine.. buy a sewing machine.. ;)

mine putts and fhutts now and then at idle - not constant just now and then...spent waaay too much time stressing over it - now I just ignore it - tractor runs great under load and at higher rpm - might just be a valve not seating right or any number of things.

if it runs fine at load, valves are set correctly, starts easy, and does all you want it to. but has an occasionalty hiccup at idle? then yeah. I'd just ignore it. You can chase and idle hitch a loooong$$$$ time to make a 70 year old machine to run like a sewing machine. can it be done? sure..
