The tractor that wouldn't say go

The saga continues with my 41 9N. So, my reconditioned crank and new bearings arrived today. I was excited all day to get home and start putting her back together. Flipped the block over after cleaning the coolant ports out with an airgun the best I could. I notice a crack in the back of the block where the oil seal is. So instantly I think cracked block, start over completely. Turns out its a cheap piece of junk pot metal seal retainer. I tried to take the broken piece out and the rest of it just crumbled. Is that the best we can do? I looked on YT and that one looked like pot metal too. I am leary about buying a used one. What do you think? Was my new rope seal really that tight when I put it in earlier?

I think you are right that it is made out of pot metal. I broke mine when I replace my rear seal many years ago, by trying to tap it out of the channel with the crank still in place. I ended up by getting a used one. I believe new ones are around 20-25 dollars and if I were to do it again I would go with a new one. Don't know how much pressure the rope seal exerts on it, but I guess anything can break if overstressed..

I just ordered one from this site. when i replaced the seal the last time I only soaked it for about 2 hours. this time the seal will get a 2 day soak. They are much softer after soaking. Hopefully that does it.
I guess it is better that i found it now rather than have pieces floating around in my engine later.

When I did mine, I soaked the rope seal in warm oil for several hours. Even then I don't remember it taking up too much of the oil. Don't know if warming the oil did much good, but it made me think it would. Front rope seal held good, but even after four years I still get a drop or two out of the real one. At least I know the seal is not running dry.......... and as it was once explained to me by a seal manufacturer's rep: "By design, a seal is a controlled leak."
Guess some just have better control than others. LOL Good luck with your rebuild.
