waiting for repair guy for month decided to fix myself. picked up tune up kit at Tractor Supply.

before I swapped parts I tried to see where the problem was. not gas as I drained tank from bottom plug under carb.
tested with meter top of coil got +6volt. pulled plug wire and plugged old one in and cranked seen spark.
the key switch was loose so I tighted. I kept getting a clicking noise from solenoid swith, I also noticed the amm metter was going a little neg. and starter and wouldnt turn. I removed switch and put battery on charger.

Next day I reconnected the sol switch and put battery in. It started right up. now with the key on and with key off. It is great but concerned about the key switch.

wiring is old and the terminal thing is also original.

" picked up tune up kit at Tractor Supply"

That's a good source for shirts, chicken feed & POL. But I'm not impressed w/ the quality of there tractor parts & prices. You will be much, much happier w/ a set of Bluestreak or Echlin points.

" plugged old one in and cranked seen spark"

How wide was the gap on the plug?

" now with the key on and with key off"

Which means the switch is shorted open. Next time, it could short closed. Time to replace the switch.

" wiring is old and the terminal thing is also original."

Check out tip # 42. That's a cheap & easy project that will save you lots of frustration w/ that tractor.

" clicking noise from solenoid"

9N's don;t have solenoids. do you have an 8N or did someone add a solenoid to your tractor?

My observations about parts for N's:

This site has quality parts at reasonable prices, as does nnalert's.

NAPA has quality parts at high prices.

TSC has poor quality parts at high prices.

ounds like key switch is no longer turning off, so better fix that or you will be draining battery & if engine stops with points closed, may ruin points & coil. How are you stopping engine now?

so far I see a possible bad key switch.

dead battery, and you have some customized wireing, as 9n/2n's don't use start relay's

if the switch was iffy. no question. change it.

check to see if you are charging, post back.

if an issue. tell us what else is not oem with the electrical system

this has a solinoed switch in the middle under the battery. one cable goes to starter, another goes to battery and ammeter. then one goes to a starter button in dash.

I replaced the plugs as this was the easiest and I used an old one for testing it was gapped at .25 It was low light and had no problem seeing spark. I didnt do anything with the switch as far as testing. I turned the gas off and let the tractor run until it died from no fuel.

yes when started it was charging the battery.

this was my Dad"s tractor and he has passed 5 years ago. He had the engine overhauled 10 years ago and this unit alway started right up.

I was looking at parts online and have a TSC right up the street from me. Didnt have to pay for shipping. unfirtunately no key switch will need to order one.

Any idea Y the solinoid was clicking and starter not going? could the key switch cause this?

" Any idea Y the solinoid was clicking and starter not going?"

The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))

2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)

3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)

4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

" could the key switch cause this? "

Unless you have some truly bizarre wiring, no. That's because the ignition switch only controls current to the coil, not the starter.

Thank you everyone

It turned out to be the key switch. I pruchased a new key switch and a new wiring harness and rewired the unit. Cleaned all terminals good with wire brush and now it.

Starts right up and now shuts off with the key.
