Today's little project

A few years ago I bought a 9N that a tree had fallen on.
This bumper was one of the casualties.
I noticed it was originally riveted together so I set it off in a corner until a rainy day. (yeah, first one in years ;) )
Anyway, today I got a round tuit and straightened it out a bit.
Joan added her painting skills and gave it a good coat of Rustoleum primer and then a first coat of Sunrise Red.
I obviously didn't get it perfectly straight, but we plan on
bolting it on and using it anyway. Looks much better to us!

What a great salvage job. Looks really nice to me. You've seen my jaunty grinning bumper on my 8N, I'm sure. Not nearly as straight as yours.

Good work, Royse!

The next time you buy paint, try Rustoleum safety red. I think it's closer to the original ford color than sunrise red. I painted my grader box with the safety red then touched it up later with a spray can of ford red from TSC and the color was a perfect match. A gallon of that paint from Lowes is pretty reasonable in that color. Nice job on the straightening. Once on a tractor, someone would have to be looking at it for more than a glance to notice the wave!

Thanks Colin! We try not to waste anything, so...
I really think it will bolt right on and look good.

Royse-- Impressive repair. I can truly appreciate your efforts for I have built 3 or 4 of the original style ( the drop-down main beam) from scratch and know how difficult it is to bend that heavy strap iron.

Looks good to me!
That's a good day in the shop!
Gives one a warm fuzzy feeling don't it!
I'd say you earned a beer tonight!

BI, "she thinks my tractor's secksy". LOL
Good thing she finds something to keep her around! ;)

I had to use a torch to straighten the uprights.
Then a little bit on some parts here and there.
But most of the straightening was done on a press.
Cheap Harbor Freight 20 ton I bought a couple years
ago.
I've got my bucket of adapters growing nearby.
(thanks to Hobo for that tip!)

Here's mine. All I had was the main section that mounts to the axle. I bent the other 3 pieces and welded them to the new uprights and then drilled holes for carriage bolts that kind of look like rivets. I guess I didn't look closely enough at photos of complete ones or I would have moved the uprights into the bend of the 3 new horizontal pieces, like the originals. But, it beats the heck out of what I had and it works just fine......

Great job on yours Royse. You turned a piece of mangled junk into a functional and good looking addition to your tractor!!

Mine is here....

Nice work Royse. Did you replace rivets? Mine had some broken rivets that I replaced with bolts for now but it looks pretty bad.

No, actually those are 5/16 x 1" ribbed shank carriage bolts.
If I ever find the right rivets I'd certainly consider putting them in!

looks like you did a very good job. i want to get DH to make us a custom one that we can hang some weights on.

That bumper reminds me of Rustbucket Dan... He knew very little about repairing stuff like that but had the ambition... He would tackle stuff that most folks would scrap,,,He gotter done... I think that's a lot more than a little project...

And where is Dan and his Rustbucket these days?

I bought the 20 ton. It was only a few dollars more.
So far I haven't broke it. (or me)

Thanks!

$199 here now. I have a 20% off coupon. Some say it can be stacked. Also note they have a newer version. It's grey vs orange. Reviewers say it is better somehow.

Going on my wish list!

Hookie/Hobo - Still here - and working on my 3 Ford tractors! Did not have the money to really put the work into finishing up my '39 until recently (landed a good job again finally). My FIL was tired of looking at all the sheet metal we repaired and welded up several years ago and have not touched since taking up space in his shop - so we got to sandblasting last weekend. Only able to do the small repairs needed on Delilah and Rustbucket from general wear and tare.
