I drained my hyd.fluid with the 3 drain plugs then
i put 5 gal. of new hyd. fluid back in and nothing
is showing up on the dip stick.why?I thought 5 gal.
should fill it up? any thoughts?

WHERE did you put the 5 gallons of oil?

Sounds like you may have the wrong dipstick.

Try removing one of the lower inspection plate bolts. The oil level should be at least that high, if not a bit higher.

put all 5gal.into the fill plug to the left of the shifting lever. I took out the top bolt of the inspection cover and nothing ran out

Bruce-I know U know all about N series tracors.I am looking 4 a Dearborn side mount mower 2 put on my '39 9n. found part of one in MA, but need another 2 make 1 out of 2. Any tips/help appreciated!!

I let it sit all day and nothing on dip stick. If i take the bottom bolt off the inspection cover and oil runs out is that enough oil in it?

Yes.
You can buy the correct dipsticks here, nnalert's, ebay, etc. Maybe even Tractor Supply. Cheap.

Bottom bolt hole is the full mark.
Is your dipstick an aftermarket or perhaps broken off?
I have also (once) seen the dipstick tube replaced
with one that is too tall for the dipstick to reach.

You're full if it's coming out of that bottom bolt hole.

Unless you have an early 9N (before sn 47,508), the transmission dipstick is p/n 9N7137B and measures 8.25" long.

Took the bottom bolt out and no oil coming out.should i go get more oil and keep filling it until it runs out of the bottom bolt hole?Just seems weird that 5gal. isnt enough.

I wouldn't dump any more in until you know what's
happening to it.
When you have that bottom bolt out of the inspection
cover, can you stick a wire through it to the inside?
Seems odd that 5 gallons didn't fill it.
Usually less than that does it. Like 4 1/2 - 4 3/4.
You would obviously notice if a plug was left out of
the bottom, so where else could it be going?
Just to verify, we are talking gallons, not quarts right?

Yes i bought a 5gal. pail of hyd. oil.Good idea i will take a wire and see if i can push it into the hole.

Man, I'd sure like to know where that oil went!
It might be worth pulling that cover off and looking
in to see if the oil is even close to the right level.
It's 5 more bolts, but there is a gasket there.
Hopefully someone else has a better idea!

For sure a N tractor, right?

Like Royce said, they usually don't take the full 5 gallons because of old oil and sludge in there.
I'd pull the cover and take a look.
no pressure there, so easy to reseal the cover.
If you don't want to do that, take out the bottom inspection cover bolt. Then jack up the left rear tire to get a little tilt to see if you are close.
Please post your fix when you figure it out.
Curious myself.

Maybe it's like the grocery store. Maybe there ain't 5 gallons in a 5 gallon pail anymore...hahahaha

Just rebuilt my dad's 8n hydraulics and 5 gallons only came about half way up dipstick, did clean a little sludge out, but very little.

Sorry, I'm not the guy yo ask about sidemount mowers! I've only seen one on an N in my life.

Start another thread on the topic; I'm sure others around here can help.
