Starter locked up

While trying to fix my 2N the starter locked up. I first tried rocking
it by hand. No luck. Then chained the FEL on my 8n to the front
bumper and rocked it in all gears. No luck. I loosen the starter bolts
a little and banged it with a hammer. No luck. Decided to pull the
starter but the front plate of the starter wouldn't release from the
bell housing. Do I have to pull the starter casing off from the
aperture now? Then maybe I can work it back and fourth till it
releases? I've checked the archives and seems I've done every thing
suggested. But didn't find how to pull a lock up starter. I do have a
new style bendix on hand that I could put on it

When you rock it, it has to move far enough to turn the engine
a bit or it won't release. I assume you did that with the 8N.
I have heard of turning the PTO on, transmission in gear and
turning the PTO shaft to cause the engine to turn.
If all else fails you could try some penetrating oil on the front
plate and taping a thin chisel in under it to get it to pop loose.
The danger there obviously is breaking the plate.

I probably already rocking it harder than I should. Engine won't turn
over. Tried driving a screw driver between the plate. No luck there. I
don't know if trying from the PTO side would help any. I do have a 4
foot pipe wrench.

The pipewrench worked for me, but as I learned here after posting that, NOT in gear. Only need the PTO engaged not the tranny to turn the engine.

PTO and pipe wrench did the job. Tried counter clockwise first. No luck. Clockwise and it broke loose with out a whole lots of force. Didn't really expect much since I tried so hard with the rocking. But it did the trick. Thanks all. Now to see if I can get it running right. Might not get that done till next weekend. Got to leave out in the morning and got other things needed done. Got a long weekend next week.

grapeview8N, do you happen to have that thread handy?
I'd like to read the explanations for that.

I got the information from this post. I had looked at the archives
but but didn't see that. I'm sure it there. But the archives can be had
to use here. You type in your key words and might get a 1000 hits
but only a few apply to your question. But for any future reader of
this page all I can said is it did work.
