JMOR...and old followup

JMOR:

I'm tapping you on the shoulder because I am using one of your past posts for guidance.

Just got an 860 gas frankentractor that starts and charges (I don't see how after looking at the wiring). It is a 12 volt convert on a 1 wire alternator. Immediate issue is the automotive switch start. I have a new switch and the tractor came with a new 4 prong solenoid, yet to be installed. Sooo, searched archives and found this thread:

http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=936763&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=jmor+wiring&start=30

Using the tests you provided and testing "in hand", I have new solenoid version #3. Have tested the OEM start switch and it is good (immediate connection with ground when pushed).

Have fair electrical knowledge, but a little ignorant as to wiring this solenoid. No markings whatsoever on it. Just two large (i call them load) connections and two small connections. I gather I can use this solenoid. If not will order a 3 stem version.

Can you advise?

not jmor.. and his shoes are pretty big, but here goes.

your 4 post solenoid needs to be a isolated base/coil style if you want to use the thumb button.

here's the test.

ohm meter. neither small terminal should have any continuity to the metal case.

the 2 mall terminals SHOULD have continuity to each other, and not to either of the large terminals.

as a test.

ground case with jumper cable hooked to bat ground. other jump cable hooked to bat hot. not take the free hot cable and hit one then the other small terminals. if it clicks. wrong solenoid. if no click, then hook the 2 jump cables to the 2 small terminals, if that makes it click. it can be used with key on and thumb button

and that's how it's wired. wire from key ( coil side ). to one small terminal. other small terminal to thumb button, 1 large connnection to battery hot. other large to starter.

Gotcha. Using JMOR's test on the old post...and the only one I have yet to do...solenoid in hand and not touching tractor (using battery in the shop) put battery positive to one small terminal and negative to other small terminal. That actuated the solenoid.

Will test as you advised with meter tomorrow.

Thank you sir!

SoundGuy, it passed all the tests, so I can use it. Didn't get the chance to put it in today cuz had honeydo list. Maybe tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.
