A Starter Scare!!

Was doing some work with the 8N today. When I went to start it back up it turned over once but my fingers slipped off the key and it stopped. Tried again and the starter solenoid just clicked. Tried to rock the tractor in case the starter got stuck (which has never happened before) but all I got was clicking. Wire to the starter was getting warm so figured it was probably getting voltage. Went to the house and took the starter off my parts tractor (and I have no idea what shape it is in!). Put some tools and the starter in the wagon pulled by my mower and went back to the tractor. Decided to try one thing before pulling the starter. Loosened the screw holding the "timing cover" in place and using a big screwdriver moved the flywheel a couple notches. First movement was hard then it was quite easy. Tried again and it started right up!! This was first experience in 4 years owning this 8N that it didn't start - other than when I first got it and the battery kept dying because a wire going to the alternator ended abruptly in a piece of tape before getting to the alternator!!

Yes the heart skips a beat when something like that happens. One more thing to keep in the back of your mind if that happens again, it's worked for me. Have a good sized pipe wrench handy and turn the PTO shaft with the tractor in gear. As you found, it only needs to move the flywheel a pinch.

Tractor does not have to be in gear, only the PTO. Make sure tractor is not in gear in case it should start (you left the key on du***y)

As UD alludes to.. a non live pto N for SURE does have pto engaged to engine while tranny is in neutral. otherwise you could not use the tractor to run a generator or water pump...

thik about it.

Thanks guys. I feel like the tractor novice that I am, but that's exactly why I come to this forum. I even had to go to the tractor to try it, but as soon I did the light came on, PTO engaged, engine engaged. I could have been in a foot race with the 8N to see who made it back to the house first!
