860 company for my Jube

Well, I reckon I officially have the fever. This is the new addition to the "family". She is a 1957 860 with working live PTO and working two stage clutch, five speed that does not slip out of third or reverse, lift that seems to work fine (more to test), and starts well, no smoke and holds 40lbs oil pressure (yet to be verified). Numbers look good, EXCEPT model number is followed by an "L", which in the next series meant LP. Not sure about this...may mean block has been changed at some point?

Could use new shoes. Has the dreaded automotive start switch (which will be the first fix), and bent leveling box (PO did this today before I got on scene), only OK tin and wiring is generally a mess.

This is my first venture past 1953 and I have lots to learn. Guess I need to stick my toe in at the FORD forum for advise on this one.

Pretty nice old tractor.
Step up from your Jube in better hydraulics, double clutch and more power but not a lot different really.
I always figured I'd prefer an 800 over an 801 because of the big bore carburator and excessive fuel consumption on the 801.
I really didn't need the extra HP it gave anyway.
Dunno what the L means. Texas or Dean will.
Your fenders look pretty good. They only used those for a couple of years on the X00s (and then for a couple more on the early 6000s) so they are the least common of all the Fords and getting hard to find nice ones.
If you do change the rears on it go to the correct 13.6s instead of the 12.4s it has now. I think they look better.
I have that same bumper on my mowing tractor and recently found a pair of weights for it.
Bought the special struts (#6 in the photo) from Jim UT about 1 1/2 years ago
Took me 4 years to finally put it all together.

The L in the model number indicates that it was originally an LPG tractor which has obviously now been removed. LPG became available in 1957 on the last of the X00 series.
 
UD: I wondered what the extra holes in the bumper were for. Thanks for that. Tin is a little rough, particularly around the nose and down legs. Makes the hood not close correctly. Hopefully there is enough meat left to bend, and shape. Looks like some Bondo there too. I thought it may be an aftermarket bumper. It's a little bent up and needs a weld or two. Knowing it is correct and can hold weights with proper braces inspires me to work on it.

Texas!: I saw that the 01 series was marked with an L to designate LP and wondered if it applied to the 00 series. If the serial number is true it is a '57. Don't see evidence of the LP, but in reality might not recognize such anyway. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Have not decided if I am going to keep it. Don't really want to get rid of my Jube because I have too much work in it. Tried to explain to my wife that a guy can't really have too many tractors. Not sure that registered! :lol: Anyway, will use it awhile and then decide.

David....nice tractor..the running boards on your
tractor appear to be "flat" without the upturn at
the toe end. These flat boards were used on the
1955 models....I don"t believe they were standard
on later 800"s. I have a 1955 860 with the flat
boards and have not seen them on any other model
than the 1955. Love the fenders....nice!

Your tractor won"t work any better with the flat
boards on.....:>)

I thought those looked odd! Don't have owners manual yet...on order. But do have master parts catalog and hadn't taken time to look at those yet. Thought the fuel shutoff and sediment bowl was wrong, but GB in MT knew they were right. Not that everything has to be original, but farmerized stuff bugs me sometimes.
 
Use it for a while before you give it up and keep
the 53. It is a great working tractor, I have one
of each and hardly use the NAA anymore.
 

Agree! Got too much sweat and too many busted knuckles in the Jube to feel good about getting rid of her yet.

Was beginning to think the same. I'll look for some other numbers on the castings to confirm that. Not that there is anything wrong with a hybrid.
