Lift arm Welding ?

Got a new end piece with orbital for a lift arm repair. What rod should I use? What setting on my Sears buzz box? The new piece is beveled should I also bevel the lift arm?

bevel it..7018 rod..100amps..run a 1"bead..let it cool..check color..if blue turn it to 90amps..if white 110..bead should be golden color

At those amps I hope he is using 1/8 inch rod and not 3/32.
I agree with beveling it but I would run the first pass with 6010 and then cap with 7018.
3/32 rod will run nice anywhere from 65 to 72 amps.
I guess it will also depend on the level of experience as a welder.
Just my 2 cents. Not trying to step on toes.

rule of thumb..electrode dia. should be the thickness of material to be welded..1/8 is usually used, except in fab shops

So what you are saying is that if I am welding a piece of 1/2 inch metal the rod should be a 1/2 inch diameter ?

What you say about 1/8 is usually used except in fab shops is bogus. Doesn't make sense.

As a retired certified welder I find the info you are stating is not correct.

Run a 6010 pass on it, then cover with 7018. Just saying.

if welding in ship mfg. or similar fab. they match
rod with mat. hardly seen any more except for
repair. keeps from multiple passes.
fab shops usually have a range of electrode to
match jobs.
dont know what you did. i sold electrode to all
facets of welding repair ind.
why 6010 as root pass?

He said he has a buss box. Is it AC/DC? Maybe just AC and he doesn't sound like he's done a lot of welding. 6010 is makes a good root pass if he has a DC welder. If only AC he needs 6011. 7018 is normally DC but you can get 7018 for AC. If he is a beginner he will not know how to whip quick-freeze rod to do a proper root anyway. For a beginner 7014 will work much easier and he will learn with experience. Good rods for beginners are 6011 and 7014. A single bevel will give him enough to fill and it will work just fine. 1/8 rod is a good size to learn with.
