I'm doing a 12V conversion on my '52 8N (side-mount distributor) and to save time I purchased lower and upper alternator brackets from Yesterdays Tractors specifically for the 8N (Part number 8NL10302 and 8NL10303 for the upper and lower bracket, respectively). The lower bracket fits well but I am at a loss to figure out how the upper bracket is supposed to be oriented to fit.
It struck me as odd as soon as I took it out of the box because both ends of the bracket have a single hole with an adjustment slot in the middle portion of the bracket.
On one end of the slot the bar forms an L with a bolt hole at the end of the L while the other end has an offset of about 1 1/2" which I need since the alternator adjusting bolt is farther forward than the generator bolt was. If I try to mount the bracket using the offset end, the adjustment slot won't align with the alternator bolt unless I let the alternator hang well outside of the hood. If I bolt the other end to the old mount, I have the bend I need to allow the slot to align with the alternator bolt, but now I'm lacking the offset I need.
Although the part number is correct, it doesn't seem like the correct bracket. Unless I'm missing something it appears I'd have to modify this custom made bracket in order to get it to work. If the offset and the L were on the same end I think I'd be in business. As it is I can't understand what the purpose of the hole on both ends of the bracket is.
Has anyone out there used this bracket successfully? Please help!
