Tractor's Name

OK, so it seems a number of 8N owners name their
tractor(s). The only one that has been used for
the '49 I picked up a month or so ago came from my
1 1/2 year old granddaughter: "My Tractor". I
don't think that will stick except in her mind!!
So, what do you call YOUR tractor?

NAA i bought prior owner had named Christine, so that stuck. wife decided the 52 N needed a name too so we call her Olga. (Old Gal)then came the green painted lawn tractor so that is Maggie (spawned by Mean Green; or MG)

I used to name them but have been through a few tractors in the past few years so don't name them much now.
I'm kind of a closet WWII naval history buff so always gave them historical names.
I still have my little go-to mowing tractor I call Arleigh Burke as it is a rough and tough, don't try this at home, get er done machine. - after one of my heros in the fighting around Guadalcanal.
For a while I had an oversized engine in one of them so I called it Musashi as it seemed like the Musashi/Yamato battleships it burned about 43 tons of fuel per hour at battle speed. But I sold that one.
I'm building a new one here that might replace
Arleigh Burke one of these days.
Hadn't thought about naming it but now that you mention it maybe Admiral Halsey will do.

WRONG color, but my 4020 is named "Ingrid" after my deceased neighbor's Norwegian-born wife Ingrid.

Ingrid spent MANY hours pulling a pull-type combine or haying with that tractor!

I named my Grandfather's '49 Farmall Super A after him: Ernest.

My Father had a '52 8N that I recovered from permanent retirement out in the field after he passed. I named it after him: Glen.

I had a Farmall 140 but not long enough to name, it was just "the 140".

And I picked up another '52 8N a few years ago. My Wife made me get rid of one of my existing tractors to buy it, so the 140 had to go! I named that 8N after the guy I bought it from: Frank.

I needed names after I got the 2nd 8N to distinguish between them. The names were obvious choices.

Jimps in GA.

Cubby! My wife claimed this tractor from the git go, so she thought she should get to name it. Since we have several tractors but don't farm any more, naming them seemed like the thing to do. Back a few years when she threatened to divorce me over something she didn't like, she would always say "you know, I'm keeping the house, AND CUBBY" since she knows Cubby is my favorite!

The 8N is named by my wife as 'Missy'..short for mistress :D
The 2N is also named by my wife and kids as 'Grasshopper' because over the years of wear and tear it does look like a big grasshopper.

When the grandkids were younger they had names for them....Ernie....Bert (from Beatrice, NE), and Big Bird (the 860)

I just call them the 860 and the N"s, and when they need fixing, well, can"t tell you what all they have been called.

Tim

My 960 is Ben Harvey after the man I got it from & a guy who was a great help in me getting it home.
The 8N was bought from a cemetery where it had lay dead for a few years so I call it Casper.

(quoted from post at 13:57:25 03/06/14) I just call it by its number, 9N.

Same here - it's "the 8N." The '52 we had when I was in High School was named [i:6cdc0a2a90]Franklin[/i:6cdc0a2a90].

I have tried to put the names on here that I have called my 2N lately, but they say this is a family forum and that kind of language is unacceptable.

Two of them are named after the po. Mr Edd and Grampa Ray. Mr. fixit got it's name cause that's what I had to do to it. Mr fixit was meant to be a parts tractor but it started and ran so good, oh well the rest is history.

I just refer to mine as the '50 8N, the '51 8N and the '52 8N. The John Deere is just the Deere. None of this applies when they're malfunctioning. Then they temporarily get considerably different names.

When I was a lad we had a workhorse whose name was "JAKE". Ole Jake used to do most of the powerful labor on our 250 acre farm. He plowed, he disced, he even pulled the hay wagon full of hay into the barn for unloadeing.

One day, I found Jake dead in the barn. Circa 1947. My dad knew that Jake was worn-out, but for me, it was quite an emotional experience.

Meantime, my dad already made an acquisition for a 1941 9N.

After we buried JAKE, a 1941 9N showed up at the farm. When I got home from Church, one Sunday, we decided to name the tractor "JAKE".

Afterall, Henry Ford, himself, said "The "N" is to replace the workhorse on the farm. In fact "to keep the next generation on the farm, the Ford "N" will be a necessity".

Well.....I still have JAKE in the barn. Ready for work, if ever he is needed.

Meantime, most of the elder brothers and sisters have left the farm, after WW2. Seems like I am the only left, now.

So, "JAKE" has become a personal collector's tractor. Might even say "family piece".

John,PA Hope it warms up. Just to open the barn doors and start him up.

Our house came with tractor and implements, for years the tractor was just that "the tractor" Then a friend decided to call her Patina and so far it's stuck
Me=husband
Wife=wife
1st n favorite Pygmy goat=buttercup(or girlfriend)
1969 Harley (kick only) plate=EXWIFE (had the bike first)
Wife's Mini Cooper plate=LTL CAR

I named my '48 8N..Betsy... she is stubborn like a mule sometimes...Started having troubles with the coil and points while plowing snow my first winter with her. She would run for maybe an hour and would take another hour to get started to get back to the shed. She knew when the snow was just to much for her to plow until the next morning... took me a few snow falls to figure out what was fully going on since I just bought it

Every single piece of farm equipment is named Molly. That was the name of one of grandpas work horses. Every time he hooked up the team he would say "come on Molly, you gentle animal" in German. I'm not sure where it came from, but any time I fire up machinery around here I use grandpa's phrase. It most often gets used on the loader tractor just because I use it most. The grain truck gets it a lot during harvest. In fact, just about every time I take off - the old '58 needs encouragement.

The cars have different names. I have always named my collector cars.

Most of mine are just called by their model number.
But where I have multiples we have named them.
An 8N named Smokey Joe for example.
Probably no explanation needed.
My '41 9N we call Ole Reliable. 6V, all stock, 95% original.
If nothing else will start, he'll pull it until it does!
My Jubilee with the loader on it we call the Gubly.
I guess it's better than calling it ugly! :)

1948 - "Betty" get it? Betty Ford. When first acquired, the steering was too loose to plow a straight furrow - Looked like a staggering drunk was at the helm.

1950 - "Ms Daisy" From the movie. Like the character, the tractor is demented, cantankerous, and mean spirited.

1963 4000 NF RC - "Special K" The tractor is head and shoulders more capable than the N's and "K" is the symbol for thousand.

Beast
(The strong tractors during a hard pull, etc)
My JD is the 'Big Green Tractor'
darn song is hard to get out of yer head.
Most times, it's just,
a pat on the hood and a 'good ol tractor' after shutting it down after some very hard work.

And I do talk to em when doing a difficult repair.
'ya might as well give up you miserable -----
we can stay in this shop until the end of time, but I WILL
fix you' :D

I got the 2n from my grandfather about 30yrs ago and my father thought it should have a name so he just called it Henry.

In 1939 My uncle purchased a demo. 9N for My Grandmother and Great uncle that raised Me. I was 10 years old at the time and learned to drive on that old girl. We called it "Old Cora" after My Grandmother so now I have a 2 N (1947) and it"s also "Old Cora". My Grandmother had never learned to drive a car so after My uncle passed I taught Her on the old Cora, She enjoyed driving a lot and laughed, really made Me feel good. I"ve also got a 1937 J D "B" it"s called "Dolly" after My Mother-in-law who has also passed. My pickups have all been "Herkimer" after a mountain in New York that used to be dangerous to go down when driving a truck back in the 1950s. The old 1949 R E O Speedwagon is just "Old Blue". Pat. P. Central Ill.

Dad used to say "Whoa Blaze" when comeing in,so every thing is Blaze when I'm using it,otherwise whatever the MFR called it.

we call our tractor "Tennessee". Short for Tennessee Ernie ...Ford.
If it was a girl we would have named her Mary....Ford. (In honor of singer/guitar player, Les Paul's wife, Mary.)
