SUCCESS, rebuilt the new distributor with the drive shaft that arrived an hour ago and just finished installing the distributor on the tractor. Nice strong blue spark. She trys to start so now...

On to the carb. Old carb had a crack so YT also delivered a new carb. What is the basic screw setting I should have it at to start and run this old girl? Electrical I'm pretty good at, carb I'm a novice so I'm looking at a large screw towards the front of the carb as it's mounted on the tractor and one on the side as I look at the tractor.

Got to get her running again today to plow. Jeep frame broke so other plow is dead and there is 9" on the ground and more coming.
Thanks so much folks

needle on side is idle mix..one on front is run
mix..turn idle screw all the way in..turn it out 1
1/2 turns ...turn run screw in then 2 1/2
out..this is starting point..set throttle about
half ..start machine..turn run screw 1/4 turn at a
time in .if rpm increases go another 1/4..repeat
till rpm decreases..this is lean setting..turn
screw out 1/4 turn at a time ..count number of
turns..continue out till rpm goes down this is
rich setting..turn screw in 1/2 the number of 1/4
turns..this is neutral setting....on back of carb
is idle set screw..set it till idle is real
slow..move idle mixture needle screw in and out
till you get the fastest idle rpm..set idle rpm
screw to fast idle.. hth..phil

If a M/S carb or the wannabe the idle setting the one close to where it bolts to the manifold you set at 1.5 turns out from bottom and pretty much leave it. The main jet the one that sits at a 45 degree angle you set at around 2 turns out from bottom and then adjust for best running/power

I've got the idle at 1 1/2 turns out and the main at 2 turns out and she is backfireing out the carb.
now what?
Thnks so much. Job

As Cooke say and also does choking it hurt or help?? If it helps open up the main a bit more. Or you may have a valve or 2 sticking and if that is the case running a quart of ATF to 2-3 gals of gas may help

Yes, the wiring order is correct, checked, checked again, and double checked!
A little background, this tractor, 49 front mount, has just been completely rewired, 12v, following JMOR's wiring diagram, new distributor, 12v coil, starter selinoid, resistor block, alternator, plug wires, plugs.
thanks, Job

Hi,
Didn't have any ATF and she has a full tank o gas so I pulled the plugs and put in some Marvel Mystery Oil. Let it sit about 30 min. and cranked it over and she spit it out the carb at me. So I added more and will let it sit over night and hope that loosens things up.
Wound up clearing 9" of wet heavy snow from 1000 feet of drive with a 24" snowblower. Been a fun day in paradise without my plow vehicle AND tractor! Hope to never do that again.
any other suggestions?
Thank, Job
