Gentlemen. was hoping to tap some of the infinite wisdom from the old timers here. I have a 1948 westinghouse 5hp air brake air compressor. thing works great except it has started popping off the 60 psi relief on top of the cylinder as it is filling the tank. Sounds like intermittent machine gun fire, but will get up to the proper pressure and cycle off. I replaced said relief valve but the new one is doing the same thing. Anyone have any idea what would cause this? Thanks in advance......Ray

With out know more of how it is plumb hard to say. You may have a valve that is sticking so it over pressures for a short time. As in a check valve between the tank and the compressor so if it sticks closed the line over pressures fast and the pop of pops. Putting some oil in the air intake might help if that is the problem

Found a longtime ago never hurts to put a little oil in the air intake of a compressor so as to lube the top of the unit. Air tool oil works the best since it in turn will oil the tools as you use the air in them but bad it your painting

I just knew someone here would know, and you nailed it old.Shot some oil in the intake and it took cacre of it.No paint spraying wiyh this old war-horse so it shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for taking the time......Ray

Your welcome. Always happy to help if and when I can. Was not sure if what I said would or would not work but knew it was worth a try
