8n has anti foulers on 2 and 4 cylinders. is that meant to be or just a fix the previous owner made?

depends.

those cyls might be pumping oil due to worn or broke oil control rings. might also have damaged the threads in the head and fixed them using the af's vs a plain insert kit.

seen that too.

Only supposed to install anti-foulers in 1/2 the cylinders. So 2. I have no guess as to why, on this tractor.

Parts don't wear or become crudded at the exact same rate, so it is not uncommon for one or two cylinders/pistons/rings to start acting up first. Spark plug anti-foulers are a useful way of prolonging the life of an engine, especially appropriate for an engine that doesn't rack up a lot of hours. While normally considered a last resort and sign that the end is near, many n-series tractors run happily for years or decades with them.

Wear though isn't the only reason for oil fouling. Rings can become stuck due to crud, corrosion and sitting too long. My very worn 8n used to run 2 anti-foulers. Without them it was barely useable - the plugs would oil foul in seconds especially when starting or idling, and when they did the only cure was to remove the plugs and wash them in gas. I finally tried an MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil, some prefer ATF) ring soak, and it cured the problem, so that I don't even run the anti-foulers any more.

You put a couple tablespoon or two of MMO or ATF down each spark plug hole and leave it there for a couple days or longer if you aren't in a hurry. If the problem is stuck rings, it will often free them. If you do a search here for "ring soak" or "MMO" here you will find much discussion. Some like to put some MMO in the engine oil, at the same time, as directed on the can.

I (and many others here) have produced some real miracle cures with this regimen, stuck rings being a very common problem.

Put a qt of ATF in 5 gal of gas. That helps clean up carbon and also helps free up sticking rings and valves. You also might put a table spoon of ATF in each cylinder when you park it for the night
