1950 8n-Ford Tractor - Generator Problem

I conducted a generator test according to the youtube video, and it does spin. I tested the voltage regulator with an ohm meter, and it grounds out on armature and field, so I thought it was bad and ordered a new voltage regulator and tested it the same way and grounded out the same. I installed the new regulator, polarized it before starting, hooked up, started, checked voltage, and the reading indicates 6 volts. I disconnected battery while running and the tractor turned off. Shouldn"t the tractor still run if the generator is working? Any ideas why its not increasing on the volt meter from 6 to maybe 7.5?

That test of pulling the battery cable off is a test that should NEVER EVER BE DONE. Doing that can/will let the smoke out of things and can also cause bodily harm to you and depending on your health can kill you.
As for what is wrong sorry I am not a generator man

I cant speak to the ohm meter testing,
but there is a nice step by step on the site somewhere, im sure someone will post it.

if your genny spins, my next step would be to start the tractor and check the voltage output at the back of the genny with the tractor running. I believe thats the FLD terminal. Then check the voltage into and out of the VR (from genny to VR and from VR to battery)

Is your ammeter working?

" I disconnected battery while running and the tractor turned off. "

That wasn"t too smart. That"s a good way to burn stuff up. That generator can put out as much as 20 volts w/o a load (battery) on it.

Use the chart that Tiger Joe attached. Soundguy & I put it together to answer the very questions you have.

if the genny motors.. but machiens doe snot charge.

do a full field test. if still no charge, jumper cutout and full field.

if either of the latter 2 help.. it is the reg.

with your new reg and no charge, but gen spins.

i'd double check WIREING.

ps. a field fault can cause a gen to weakly spin.. but not really charge.

Just pay someone to convert the thing to 12V for you and be done with all that antiquated stuff.
I read over and over here how people can not get decent VRegs any more. Why mess with all that?
