I know you love Fords and that you have a particular affection for late model Ford starters, SOOOO, I assume you know all their secrets. Had an 02 Explorer starter start not engaging about every tenth time. Its the wife's truck so I replaced the starter but the new one does the same thing. It is worse when the weather is really cold, like it is now. If I take it off and lube the shaft the bendix slides on with a silicon spray, will it help? Thanks in advance for you help. Thanks to anyone else who wants to chime in here too.

I am not a Ford man tho I do prefer some of their models over others...

You want me to guess are you gonna tell me the engine/trans combination...

Either way when it failed to engage while its on that spot pull the starter and look at the flywheel teeth... Its not uncommon to see flywheel failures on 4.6/5.4 V8's automatics...

I installed a new flywheel on a late model Ford pick'em up about a year ago and it came back with the same issue (BTW it had a new aftermarket starter on it owner supplied part so he exchanged it for another) We had nuttin to loose so I installed a OEM starter it fixed it :D (at least for now) ... I am banking that I will get that GRAVY TO DO AGAIN....

If you like that platform swap it for a Nissan Pathfinder... Don't tell my Exploder customers that I sorta like it when they come in regularly to pay their dues...

Good luck...

You guessed it, it is the 4.6 and I had a fuel pump problem about a year ago (pressure regulator) that made the wife engage the starter when the engine was actually running several times so a bad spot on the ring gear is probably a good guess.
