8N Pilot Bearing Removal

I have spent the last hour reading old posts to this board looking for information on removal of the pilot bearing from the flywheel. Do I need to remove the flywheel to do this? The tractor is split because the clutch disc was frozen to the flywheel. I am replacing the clutch and disc. The clutch came with the bearing, although the old one is smooth and sound. Also, should the throwout bearing also be replaced as a matter of course, regardless of the condition of the old one? Thanks in advance. I don"t want to have to do this again.

Yes it is easier to remove the pilot bearing with the flywheel off. Plus always a good idea to have the flywheel planed so it is flat and rust free. Cost is around $10. Also yes always a good idea to replace the throw out bearing when doing the clutch

I would replace the bearing if you can get a made in USA bearing . If the old bearing is good and made in the USA I would not replace it.I would not put a china, india, ect one in its place unless it was the only option I had. JMHO

Although I have never worked on an 8N, I have removed lots of pilot bearings from many different makes & types of vehicles. Easiest way to do it is to fill the pilot bearing socket & bearing with Grease, then take a about a 6" length of wood doweling that is just a slip fit in the bearing, place it on top of the Grease & smack the dowel with a hammer. The Grease won't compress but has to go somewhere so it forces the bearing out of it's socket.

Since you stated that the clutch disc was frozen to the flywheel; as long as you have it apart, remove the flywheel & have it machined flat and smooth, and put in NEW pilot bushing and throw-out bearing, and as WW2N said - use only American made parts. Don't cut corners, do the job right the FIRST time.

I would replace it. The pilot bearing keeps the input shaft centered which saves wear on the input shaft bearing. Before you install it slip the new one over the input shaft to make sure it fits well and doesn't bind.

It is pretty easy to make a tool to pull the pilot bearing.
Take a piece of 1/4" round stock about a foot long and bend a short J hook on one end.
Clamp a vice grip on the long part of the J hook you just made.
Reach the J hook in behind the bearing and use a hammer to tap the vice grip. The pilot bearing is just a light press fit and will tap out easily.
I have a cool tool that's made for that.
A slide hammer made by Owatonna Tool Co.
Bought it at a yard sale about 20 years ago for a couple of bucks. One of those things you hardly ever use but nice to have when you need it.

" I am replacing the clutch and disc. "

I wouldn't do that.

Have them rebuilt. You never know what you are getting these days when you buy new parts.

You've got plenty of good advice here on pulling the pilot bearing; I've got nothing to add.

Label the 6 clutch bolts; they are special & other bolts will not work.

Yes, replace the throw-out bearing. And, replace the front transmission seal too. Unless you have a clutch alignment tool, you will need to remove the main shaft anyway to use that as the alignment tool.

In addition to surfacing the flywheel, make sure the ring gear is ok.
