Hi All,
Picking up a 45 2N......Gotta question about rear axel seals.
Seeing some seepage on the port drum/axel area....I questioned a
local NH dealer regarding seal availability......he told me to just
count on replacing the axels as well......he was adamant!...."You
replace just the seals on a 70 year old axel....It will be running out
the first time you mow your side hill"....further claimed.....both the
seals and the axels wear and believe me...you will be doing it
twice....since this will be my first go at 2n axel seals.....thoughts on
that one???......I have never heard that one before!!

And where are you suppose to get these new axles from? I didn't think anyone was still making them for a 2N. I know you can still get them for an 8N. But a 2N?

Ed, Not an expert, but I have six 9/2 Ns at last count. I have put Sure Seals in them and have no leakage problems.

Ed - I am 99% sure you can not get a new axle for a 9N/2N tractor... That being said, replace the outer seal is a chore as you have to pull the outer axle bearing and retainer to change that seal. I did it to my 2N and greased the bearings and install sure seals instead of letting the oil lube the bearing and count 100% on the outer seal. If you need more info when you get there, post and you'll get teh help you need. Keith

here is a picture of a sure seal installed.

and if you decide to change the outer seal also you are going to need something like this and a large press to get the hub and bearing off, and some heat to get a new locking collar on.

Sorry Guys.....it is confirmed....no aftermarket 9/2n axels......either he mis-heard me.....or I mis-spoke!!!!

Be that as it may......he said if I bring hime the axels.....he would install inner and outer seals for about 125.00.....What think ye....as I don't have a press big enough for that job!!!!

I'll stop just shy of saying the dealer is 100% FOS...

IF the axle seal surface is trashed.. you would have to repalce it. or find a way to fix the seal surface..

manu just use sure seals and go with it and have no issues.

We have a machinist here that turns the axles down slightly and makes and installs a sleeve for them. It gives the seal a new sealing surface (obviously). A cousin just had two done. I cannot remember exactly much, but it was very reasonable, as I remember. Will check. This was on an 8N. Is 9N/2N the same?

Garry

9n/2n and 8n axles are quite different.. not saying you cannot build up and remachine a surface if you wanted to.

Sounds reasonable to me to do the job correct and not haft arse it by driving SS over the original issue...

Learn the correct way to do it then decide if you want to cheap out and haft arse it with SS only...

After talking further with him...... SoundGuy ....100% FOS about covers it.......now the real question.......Sure Seals.......or remove the axels...and let the Dealer replace inner and outer OEM seals??....I don't have a press big enough for the R and R

I am with you Hobo.....if I pull the axels.....have a dealer with the
required press...tools...etc...install OEM seals.......Shoot....I am
55.......I got a 20 dollar bill in my wallet that says I will be past
caring....past anything when they need replacement!!

Thanks again guys for all the replies.....tips...and suggestions!
I am looking forward to the adventure.......I think!!!
Think this will be a April project......it is like 2 degrees outside.....I will be beating on the forum tom tom's again!

i'd do both oe seals and sure seals after packing the bearing.

I believe some here have made a press jig to do it.. that or get a machine shop to do it.

Okay Soundguy....see if I got this.....I was gonna remove the axels myself.....I don't have a press big enough for the job....nor the jig folks have made to press them on......the local NH dealer said if I brought in the axels.....the job would be 125.00....certainly less than the cost of making the jig.....larger press....etc.....so...you think sure seals over OEM seal??......think the NH dealer would press them on as well?? Regarding SSeals......do Dealers even know about SS...who makes them??

if he thinks you have to get a new axle vs reapiring one.. I don't know how savy he is about sure seals.

however I believe tisco may carry them.

if ou don't have the jig or tools, then yeah.. paying someone else to do it is no big deal.

I have a machinist near me do some of my large work if I can't do it via home press etc.
