8N Reverse Slip

Hi there, new to the board but hoping someone can
give me some pointers before I blindly tear into
the transmission.

The other day I was plowing some heavy snow and I
put my 8N in reverse. The rear wheels were
spinning a little in the snow and the engine was
laboring (nothing too new here, been doing it like
this for years). Then, the gear shift lever
popped into neutral range. I pushed the clutch in
real quick, made sure that it was in neutral and
slowly let off the clutch. Reverse was still
engaged (wheels started to spin). I pushed the
clutch in again and shifted it into 1st. As I
slowly let out the clutch, the engine bogged and
the wheels didn"t turn (gear locked). I then
shifted it back into neutral and let the clutch
out and all was fine. At that point, I took it
slow and worked it through all the gears and they
all work (even reverse). But now, if I am in
reverse and the tractor is under load, the same
thing will happen - the gear shift lever jumps
into reverse (even though the clutch is still out
and the tractor is going along in reverse), then I
have to be real gentle with the clutch and shift
it into a forward gear just slightly to seemingly
get the tranny to drop out of reverse. But as
long as I don"t labor the tractor in reverse, it
works just fine. Pulls in all forward gears
without any sort of issue.

What did I do? I read a bunch of forum answers
about the shift gates possibly being an issue.
Any ideas if it"s this simple of a fix (new shift
gates, and NOT new gears or something)?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

The set screw may have become loose on the reverse shifter rail. I would take the cover off and look.

Might have to drain some of the oil to uncover the reverse shifter rail and fork. There is a set screw on the shifter fork.
