"I have discovered if I hold down the start switch after it starts, it will continue to run."

Have you changed the solenoid recently? Have you changed the wiring recently? What happens if you hot wire the coil?

I jumped the ignition switch, started but would not continue to run.
Checked solenoid connections. Battery cable connected to large post on right, start switch connected to small post on back of solenoid, cable going to tractor connected to large post on left along with the copper grounding strap.

Hot wired from battery to coil. Tractor started and ran like it is supposed too - did not die. Problem must be from coil back to resistor. What do you fellows think?

I did clean all the connections at battery, starter and selenoid when I first started having trouble.

I probably re-connected incorrectly. I will check out tomorrow. Very cold here today. When i try to start it, I want everything possible in my favor. If connection are not the problem, I will hot wire coil.

I'll let you know.

If you hot wire the coil to a front mouned distributor don't let it run for over a few seconds or you may fry the coil etc.
The only way holding down the starter after it has started would help it continue to run is if the wrong starter solenoid was installed and the second Ign. terminan was wired to the coil so that full battery voltage is sent to the coil when solenoid is ingaged. This is how all later Ford automobiles are wired. This temporarily bypasses the resistor in the ignition circuit.

It sounds like that's what's wrong? It's wired on the right (2nd) ignition by-pass terminal of solenoid?
