Mag-Alternator-gen reset

Forum Members,
Denny O. has given me much info on the FM WW2 mag and pointers on set up. One thing he mentioned is that the generator has to be set on the opposite side of the engine to make room for the mag. Question is- did the generator ever stay on the right side? The reason I ask is when purchasing the mag the used parts guy gave me an additional part that went with the mag. It looks like an idler or belt tensioner that some how is attached to the N. Did this apparatus make it possible to attach it to the standard right side or is this idler meant to be used on the alternate left side? Any thoughts or ideas are welcome!
Again, thanks to Denny for his assistance.

dler was used to tension the fan belt since there was NO generator.

JMOR,

Thanks for the quick reply. Did not even consider that as a possibility. Am intending to mount an alternator or generator on the left side as needed. Thanks again for the answer.

Close to 30 below zero tonight with 35-60 below zero wind chill next few days.

JMOR,
The illustration helped a lot. The idler I hold must be a newer version, it has a grease fitting on the pulley shaft. Thanks again!

I got mag parts and drive from Biewers Tractor Salvage Barnsville MN. He may have what you need.

There is a right angle grease fitting on the one in the picture. The little "eye" in the center is the top of the zerk which provides lubrication for the needle bearing inside the idler pulley.

WW2N,
Thanks for the info.If I need parts or assistance will contact them. Seems the mag is working at this point. She fires consistently out of number one socket with a yellowish-blue spark. Adapted a fitting to fit the tangs on the drive and spun it with a 14.4v Dewalt cordless counterclockwise in low range. Had to slice the oxidation off the points with an exacto knife and fine sand them with 320 black sand paper. Can not wait to change the ignition over when it warms up-June or July?? Thanks again!

ou have to get creative to mount a generator or alternator on the left side of a 9N/2N/early 8N block, since the mounting bosses are not there as they are for the late 8N blocks, but it has been done in more than one way.
