Howdy,
The new gal (wife warmed up to her, named her Daisey) was delivered Sun.I tried to start her on Tue, flooded her and now she sits in the cold under the snow. I wanted to get her in the garage and tinker a bit, but it"s 6 degrees and no sense messing with her now. The choke acts like it"s spring loaded, as soon as I let go it returns to choke off, is that the way it works? Another question, She must have sat a while as the gas smells like turpentine and she smokes a lot.Does that trick with the ATF ever help with smoking as it frees up the rings?
I need to get some books, it"s my birthday next week (77th) and then Christmas, my kids want gift ideas so it will be books. I got books in the past from this site for IH"s and was not impressed. Which are the best books available.
"42--9N
Thanks,
Bob

Happy birthday! And I hope you have many more to come!

Yes. Soak those cylinders in ATF. A good tablespoon or two per cylinder. Especially before trying to start an engine that has not run in a while.

Drain the gas and put fresh gas in.

Some carbs have a spring that returns them. I have 2 that do and 2 that do not.

Get an I&T FO-4 shop manual and a owners manual. Both are available from this site. They are very good. Ford N parts from this site are also very good.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey, thanks Colin King, Mn huh?, I hear it gets cold in those parts, I"m in Wi, 35mi west of Green Bay, don"t know the temp, my thermometer blew away in that wind you sent this way yesterday!
Bob

I think that might be for the best that it got blown away. Windchill tonight is supposed to be -35 with an air temp of -17.

Stay warm!

Colin

You Yankees would just die laughing at us Southerners.....

The weather forecast is calling for sleet & freezing rain here w/ snow west of us and a low of...get ready.....32*. And the entire city has gone crazy. I'll bet you not a loaf of bread or gallon of milk will be left in the stores come 5pm tomorrow.

And the news tomorrow night will have pictures of the empty shelves & some clown trying to buy a snow shovel (for ice?) at the hardware store.

We feel sorry for you Bruce but people around here walk around in T-shirts in weather like that.
My sister in Calif, says she has to wrap a scarf around her face just to breath when the temp drops all the way into the 40s at nite. Just for the record, I"m not a fan of winter sports, Tv viewing on a cold nite is just fine.

YES the ATF works well and I have been saying so for 10 plus years now.
As for the weather I have been to places that 0 was hot and 120 was cool. Think about standing a top side watch in Scotland in Jan. from say 12 to 4 am BTDT and boy oh boy that was cold as in 25 plus below. But then been in Egypt in June and in the shade it was 120 plus

If you say gas smells like turpentine that's what you are burning and may be (is) part of the smoke problem. Clean the entire fuel sys. At your age you know better. Oh yea happy birthday. 3-4 days of atf or MMO will help stuck rings.

Everything is relative, Milk Bread and eggs why does everybody make French toast during cold weather? LOL

Bob,
I have several manuals on 9-2-8N tractors. People think I have an Ntractor library. I will send you one or two if you like. Just need your address. Happy Holidays. Hope this helps!!

Soaking the rings in MMO will help but I'd be more in favor of taking it out and running the snot out of it for half a day or more.
Put it on the brush mower or plow and really work it.
Too many of these tractors get rebuilt when they don't really need it.

Mr. T,
Sounds good and thank you but I have always been shy about giving out info on the computer. What is the safest way to pass along info? I had a wood cook stove for sale on Craig"s List and the emails and calls got pretty weird.
How much do you want for the books?, I am definately interested.
Just want to add something about those folks down south. Up north we can handle a 2 foot snowfall no problem but 1/2" of ice especially with leaves on the trees is bad, real bad, good luck.

Bob,
Thought about that too! No telling who would show up with something not above par!
The only thing that could allow communication would be to allow e-mail and I would give you my phone number. Whatever you do, this northerner understands.
There in no charge for the manuals. I have about 5-6 manuals and a 2N and 8N. Have read the manual cover to cover. The Forum has also been very helpful through the years too.
