fishing for bendix parts

Has anyone had any luck fishing out the lighter pieces of the bendix with a magnet...I need some inspiration...at least I finally got the new style drive on. I used a punch to pry the washer down and a screwdriver to hold it while I put the pin in.

Henry left a lot of extra room in the bell housing so if/when the starter drive broke you could just let it stay in the bell housing till you had to split the tractor for clutch work etc. Split more then one just to find starter drive parts form who knows how long ago in them

I have found a few starter drive parts in the bottom of the bell housing on tractors that I have split. I would leave it for now. Ain't going to hurt a thing.

I tried to fish them out of my 8N today too. Dang magnet sticks to everything but what I'm looking for. I am going to gamble and let sleeping dogs lay.

Mine shelled the whole starter drive gear after about 20 starts with the new DG. I had seen the picture Jmor posted and was a little nerves about running it. The clutch was slipping anyway so I split it and replaced clutch and got the parts out.

here is what they looked like.

This picture shows why it is difficult (at best) to try to get the broken parts out with a magnet. Has anyone ever been successful in getting them out that way?
