round coil conversion question for Bob

Hello,
I saw in a post from 2011 some pictures of Bob's round coil conversion.

Where did you get the coil wire post that was mounted on top of the distributor cap?

Are they available or was it homemade from and old coil or distributor cap?

Thanks.

I cut them out of spare oddball distributor caps with a small holesaw.

Post back if you go ahead with the conversion... I"m interested to see how it will work out for you!

OK. will do,
More questions:
I presume you drilled/tapped the dist cap contact and then simply screwed the wire post & adapter plate to the dist cap?

on the alum plate over the metal distributor.. does the dist. have holes tapped or did you have to drill/tap them?

Have you seen the idea that nnalert tractors has posted on their website (click on "products" tab). Pretty neat but he's not making them yet (economy??) I don't like putting the coil there though. too close to fan and heat

thanks.

You can make your own modified distributor cap and coil wire terminal or if you want to buy one already made up. Check out "Tractor Parts" on the left of this page. It is expensive but look at Distributor Cap Termination Kit 124XTTERM $17.62 and Pertronix Distributor Cap 124XTCP $27.95. Once you see a set of these you will see how easy it would be to make your own. My first conversion I used a modified gutted square can distributor. I found the front tab that contacts the distributor cap started to erode after one year with a 12 volt EI and a hot shot coil. The manufactured parts indicated above show no signs of wear after several years.

Thanks.

but I can not find either of those part numbers here, google or the pertronix website.

Yes.

I drilled and tapped holes.

Yes.

You need both of the above to use a remote mounted
round can coil on a front mount setup. Although it
says for EI it works just as well using points.

Not sure I understand what that terminal kit does. Seems you would still need either a gutted square coil, or an adaptor plate to replace it.

bservant & correct, Kyle

I looked again at the kit this site sells and then looked at my tractor. You are correct. There is a plate that goes over the top of the distributor and cap. It is held in place by the screw shown in the kit and the coil wire adapter. If you plan to buy the kit call first and ask about the plate. I think a plate came with the kit I purchased. The cap is drilled and threaded to accept the coil wire adapter. I was wrong in my previous post. This will only work with EI. The screw goes in the hole where the condenser hold down screw is on a points system. A condenser would stick up to high for the plate to fit flat.

I've been thinking about doing one of those for a while - it's actually quite easy ...

ame solution that Bob used for condenser in his roll-your-own conversion would allow the Pertronix block-off plate to work with points...........just mount condenser outside of distributor as on coil mounting bracket.

The factories that make those square coils
have to get the cases from somewhere before they assemble them.
We need to find out where.
sure would be easier than cleaning out a tar one or drilling an epoxy one.

just for laughs, if you are in a field with no parts handy for a conversion, some wire, tape, an old coppercore coil wire, a soldering gun, and a round coil, will get you back in the game.........
