cant get pin in new starter drive

The hole on my new n series starter drive is partially covered up by plate. Can anyone help me out in figuring out what or how to depress the plate in order to get the pin in.

I have used two c-clamps on opposite sides of the spring to compress it. Place them so they don't block access to the hole. They must be pretty close to opposite, and tighten them evenly in small increments.

open the jaws on your vice to allow shaft to pass thru. set starter down drive first onto jaws. press down.. hole is open.. poke pin in

The pin hole for some new drives is in a different location than for the original drive. I'm not sure how you tell. I have a starter with two holes in the shaft, one is close to the end and the other is further away from the end.
