I need to make a mink stohl. Lost 14 chickens last night to a mink. We were due to take the birds to the processor today. The bugger came back while we were loading the truck, but I didn't have my shot gun.

Any tips on trapping or otherwise dispatching this character to a purgatory filled with blood sucking chickens with fangs?

If you can make it so he/she only has one hole to come in,you could use a conabear, (probably grossly misspelled) It's a neck trap that you can set by hand, place over or in the hole and wait. They're good for mink, muskrats, big rats of other types.

Back when trapping mink and muskrat for fur was worth
money, we used to trap them along the creek (crick) banks.
It was very hard for us to trap a mink out of water.
A baited dead bird might work, but what else would it draw?
If it is brave enough to come out when you can see it, lead
poisoning might be your quickest solution.
A .410 would work fine.

I think you got more then one, bet you gave that a run by yourself. 1 mink does not have a icebox big enough. I bet hes got help. Con-a-bear is a great trap will catch one.Two thoughts 1 coons 2 coons or more and you caught a mink in the act. I am sure you have a better idea and maybe it is just a mink. Where is he dragging all of them, any other tracks? drag marks. Here is what I and others have done here. Run 4 or 5 strands of electric wire or nylon close together low and not to high and hot as it goes around the chicken house. Go get a road killed coon and put it by the chicken house. or butcher all the chickens now and buy eggs till next year.

I've had pretty good luck with glue traps (for rats & mice) but the size is limited plus cost a bit much. I'm gonna order some of this stuff & make my own.
It should stop them in their tracks (literally)

A 110 conabear will work, but make sure no pets(cats) will enter the hole, it will break their necks. Make sure kids know not to touch it, could break a wrist. A small wood box slightly larger than a 110 with a 1/4 slot on each side to slide the springs in when the trap is set should work, put bait in the back of the box to attract, fish or sardines might work.

I caught one last night. You might be right that there is another, but I'm not sure. Once they get into a killing frenzy, they can pretty much wipe out a flock pretty quick. I'm going to set the trap again and see if anything stops by for a look see. I have the livers from our recent chicken butchering for fresh bait, so that should bring them in.

Is your fence a DC or AC powered fence? Do you use a fence charger?

Royse, Glad to see someone knows the proper spelling of a woodland stream = crick! :)

I ended up baiting a live trap with one of the dead chickens. Worked like a charm. Had the bugger in the trap this morning. I'll try that again for a few more days - the weather is so cold that the carcass is staying fresh - or try some fresh chicken livers.

Thanks, guys! I'll keep the conabear 110 in mind. I was able to get one this morning using a live trap baited with a dead chicken...

don't be afraid to switch things up...they get smart real quick and varying your setup helps keep them on their toes.
