Oil Question

I usually buy WM's Super Tech oil & just noticed they now have 2 types. One says "Conventional" & is a buck or so higher.
What's the difference? :roll:

Impossible to say from that little bit of information but it sounds odd. Around here SuperTech synthetic is about $5/qt and their conventional is about $2.75.qt. They also have a "hi-mileage" conventional that is a buck or so higher than their base line conventional oil.

that matches my observations at my local walmart..e tc.

I have 1 tractor i run on the ST 10w30 full syn.. the rest are getting C rated 15w40

Sorry, I forgot to add it was for the 5 qt bottle of 10w30. Actually noticed it last week on 5w20 when I was getting for wifes car so must be all of them.
The word "Conventional" is the only (obvious) difference I see besides another dollar or so.

Oil discussions are like discussions of religion and politics. Talk about oil in the Ns the manual recommended that in very cold weather it could be thinned with kerosene,talk about viscosity alteration? Long story for short Rotella T 15-40 year round but I have engine heaters, no heater I would go 5 or 10-30. old sold me on Rotella T.

L.B. we have to remember that when the 8Ns were built, Oils were quite a bit different than now. 30wt. which was probably the most widely used would become like molasses at below freezing temps, so it could be successfully thinned somewhat with kerosene. But then, if the bearings were a little loose in hot weather, you just added a quart or two of 50wt. to quiet them down. Ever thought about how long a modern engine would last if they were treated that way?

About ANY oil you can buy today is leaps and bounds better than what was available when these tractors were new.

Buy whatever oil give you a "warm and fuzzy" feeling, and rest assured you are NOT going to "kill" your engine.

Absolutely correct - but there are a few that aren't even that good and should not be used:

If you want to know what is inside the bottle of oil you just purchased or you want to compare competing products bookmark their site. Their data is far more detailed than anything you will get from the manufacturers.....

It was only a matter of time before somebody started screening burnt oil through a cheesecloth, adding a [i:db45f66cc8]little[/i:db45f66cc8] new oil & selling it for 3 or 4 bucks a quart.
You've only gotta get away with it for a year or so & then screw it if you get busted. You're rich & gone! :lol:

I don't think there is any legal liabiilty once you get exposed. None of those labels has an API "donut" on it so buyer beware. The 5 unopened quarts of TSC Traveller non-detergent HD 30 that arrived with my 8N has no "donut" on the label and says this on the back:

[i:51265ee158]"[b:51265ee158]CAUTION[/b:51265ee158] This oil is rated API SA. It contains no additives. It is not suitable for use in most gasoline powered automoble engines manufactured after 1930. Use in modern engines may cause unstaisfactory engine performance or equipment harm."[/i:51265ee158]

Presumably "modern" engines is anything newer than 1930. So why do you suppose TSC is selling it and what are the buyers using it in???? It's going to last me a long time because in my shop about the only thing it gets used for is as an assembly lube for non-engine parts....

Im with you a 100%, Im just saying what would somebody say today who has never heard of that. I had. I had a long post with someone who is very up too snuff, but can only "move forward newest, yuppy sayin" I made the suggestion about 65 an 70 year tractors and made it this far with Non-det St Wt 30wt oil and is showing some crank and rod bearing wear and shows oil pressure that is not unusual as so many years have got a little low. I say these engines are very tuff, forgiving an simple. That's it and had they had proper maintenance been used with less abuse some have faced there would no parts tractors. You got me curious enough to walk out to the shop.
Checked out the DG branded straight 30w I have on the shelf,
for my squirt can and occasionally I use it as a flushing oil mixed with ATF, MMO on tractors I get where I don't want to pull the pan. VERY short term. ya know, a pass around the field until it's warmed up good, then dump it.
over $2 a quart now, for years they sold it at $1.25.

Guess I'll make the longer trip to walmart from now on and stock up on their cheapest, for my throwaway oil jobs

As a flush it is fine - as an engine oil it is pitiful. If you want a mono-grade oil to run in your engines there are plenty of decent ones out there. Look for a good SAE 30 HD engine oil. Valvoline for one makes a line of premium conventional oils available in mono and multi grades. All of them are API service class SM/SL.
