Beautiful day to be on a tractor.....Part 2...trouble..

Then the tractor just stopped.....I had been mowing for about 2 hours, stopped to put some gas in, and after another hour of mowing, it just stopped.

Quickly verified that I had good gas flow. Without checking spark, I then tried to start the tractor..all I got was a continuous string of backfires, so stopped for the day and walked back to the house to get ready for my evening sit for deer....

I have a new set of plugs and points in the garage that needs to be put in the tractor....have not had to replace them for 5 years as tractor starts on the first or second revolution and has run great until today.

I don't recall ever seeing a post from someone that had the tractor stop running, and then experienced the constant backfiring.......any ideas?

This is a 51 sidemount, not the 49 that I stated in the first post...

Thanks,

Tim

Make sure the point have not slipped also make sure the rotor is turning a it should. Had that sort of problem with a IH 340 this spring and the distributor drive gear had stripped so the rotor would turn at times then stop which of course threw it way out of time so it backed fire a whole lot

check that rotor clip.. rotor might be real loose.

if it's good and it still 'backfires' ( is it really backfireing or after fireing? )

do a thumb test on each cyl..

My guess is the rotor is worn..or the clip is worn or broke....but will see tomorrow...I checked gas flow within minutes of the tractor stopping, and then tried starting the engine......it was backfiring while I was cranking it....didn't start, just backfired (popping)while cranking. Hot engine.

I had a car act like that years ago. I think condensation in the crank case migrated up into the disti. Gave the disti cap a spray of WD40 and wiped it out. Ran just fine. It was hard to see any condensation, so it probably doesn't take much.

Now, a front mount they are more isolated from the crankcase fumes.

Just something to think about. We had storms here yesterday so today I got out with the 8N to scrape the dirt roads.

After about 20 minutes it chugged to a stop like it was out of gas. I turned the valve to the emergency position and it wouldn't start. I sprayed in some starting fluid and it finally started. So I started home to put some gas in it. On the way it died again two more times.

The last time it died I was almost to it's parking spot. While turning off the gas valve I happened to check the wire on the solenoid. The wire was loose enough to jiggle by hand.

I tightened it up and put some gas into it and went back to work for two hours with no problems.

Brings to mind what the guys here keep jamming into peoples head. Clean, Bright and Tight. Bad connections cause problems.
