Hydraulic oil level

May be a silly question but I have a Ford 8N - Dipstick on Hydraulic unit shows a level and note "with lift extended". Have read many posts that you should fill the unit until it runs out the bottom bolt hole of the inspection plate. Is that with lift extended or relaxed?

don't matter.

lift cyl volume is about like a can of soda... drop in the bucket compairing to 5g sump.. etc...

It really only matters if you have a front end loader or something with a large hydraulic cylinder. The difference between your lift arms up or down will probably be less than a 1/16" on the dip stick.
I have a 1950 8n. And, when I checked oil level, it was generously over full! But the previous owner told me it was used to run a post hammer. It was probably a rather large hydro cylinder.

By the way your lift cylinder is at maximum extension when the lift arms are up.
