So after brush hogging today I shut off motor and it sounds like something is running like a starter or something, like a spinning noise, I hurry and pull a battery cable and it stops, I try to put cable back on and the engine turns over like its starting, and the switch is off, Iam using a toggle switch, I know shame on me, every time I try to put battery cable on it sparks and the motor turns over, anyone got an idea what the problem is?

it's real scarry that you have to ask.. but ..

your starter is staying energized.

now. this toggle switch. is it powering the ignition coil and some aftermarket solenoid that starts the tractor? and is wired wrong?

are you still using the oem 3 terminal solenoid and push button on the trans for starting? if so.. make sur ethat lil wire is not touching ground... it will cause the starter to energize via the solenoid.

lastly. sometimes the solenoid hangs or welds the contacts.

get on her.. put in neutral. hook bat cable up. if starter spins, bang on solenoid, after checking wireing first. if poping the solenoid fixes it. you know it was hung / welded. if it does it again.. repalce it.

gblj........you do know yer 3-terminal starter mounted solenoid is activated by GROUNDING the little middle terminal by the BIG thumb button up by yer tranny shifter lever. It is not uncommon fer yer BIG clod hoppers to accidentally kick the starter activation wire as you climb into the saddle and SHORTING the wire to ground as it goes the the hole in the bottom of the steering column sheet metal. Me? I'd replace the starter activation wire with #14ga stranded insulated copper wire with correct terminals on both ends. (actually, 16ga or 18ga is good enuff, but I like the mechanical strength of 14ga) Simple, eh? .........electrical Dell

Soundguy, you ask (are you still using the oem 3 terminal solenoid and push button on the trans for starting?) yes everything is just as I bought it a few years ago. should I hook up the battery cables even tho it is trying to start? or can I bang on the solenoid while just sitting there. I mean tap on it.
