9N - Dark Blue?

Just bought a '41 9N. It is very dark blue (not the medium Ford blue) with white rims and seat - and many rusty areas. Thinking it was re-painted, I scraped off and sanded off (to expose all layers) some blue paint in a few spots. Only thing underneath was either rust or bare metal. It appears that either someone completely stripped the dark grey off or the thing was blue to begin with. Does anyone know of 9Ns coming out of the factory dark blue and white? Thanks...

The saying on the forum is, "You can paint your tractor any color ya want". I don't think Mr Ford had any blue N tractors. 9N 2Ns were all gray as far as I know.

9Ns and 2ns were ALL painted Ford Dark Gray -M2888 from the factory. In early 1943, the 2N Ford-Ferguson was modified for a war time vehicle using many outside supplied parts to beef it up and it was called the Moto-Tug. Built under contract with US Navy, they were used on carriers, airfields, and various other places to pull WWII airplanes around with. They were designed with a lower o/a height to slip underneath plane wings and such plus had hydraulic brakes -you wouldn"t trust a normal N"s brakes on a carrier would you? The Tug had a BP paint spec that was also advertised in brochures for military and industrial use stating it could be painted olive drab green or Lusterless Ocean Grey -a bluish tinted shade as Tugs on carriers were painted. What is the serial number of your "41? Moto-Tugs used a US Navy code -BNO prefix on the Tugs. Sounds like your tractor was painted by someone using those colors.

The serial number of the "41 begins with 9N. It does not appear to be lower than a typical N-series as if it was a moto-tug. I also cannot find any remnants of any military insignia. But certainly if it is a repaint whoever did it was thorough in that they must have totally stripped it - but apparently didn"t use primer.

I plan to repaint the std dark grey but if it came this way from the factory - and from what I am reading it did not - I would consider leaving it this color...

Thanks

scrape in hidden areas, or under something that was bolted
on after it came down the factory paint line.
at the price I buy tractors, I've had many that between the rust
and the moss, there was absolutely no paint on exposed areas at all.
Whatever color I painted it would seem original in 20 years.

I eventually did find the original color when dismantling the air cleaner and brakes. Yup, grey.
